Cast On. This is what you use to start your project. You basically have two needles and a piece of yarn, Casting on creates the first row of stitches.

How do I cast on in knitting

Hi I am not a great knitter but I do know how to cast on stitches.
OK here goes, Get your two knitting needles and wrap the wool around both loosely and tie a knot, holding one needle in your Lt. hand and one in your Rt. hand (Rt. needle point is under the Lt. needle point and loop of wool is around both needles)
**take the loose end of wool in right hand and put it around the point of the Rt. needle towards you while holding every thing firmly, with your Lt. middle finger push the point of the Rt. needle back towards you and at the same time twist the Rt. needle up with your Rt. hand, catching the wool you just looped around the point of the Rt. needle, return Rt. needle back behind Lt. (you now have 1 loop on both the Rt. & Lt. needle) Still holding both needles bring the Lt. needle to the front of the loop on the Rt. needle and slip the loop over onto the Lt. needle
YOU HAVE JUST CAST ON 1 STITCH.
Insert the Rt. needle into the stitch you just made and positioned under the Lt. needle***.
Repeat from ** to *** until you have enough stitches.

NOTE to make a firmer row after the first stitch put the Rt. needle behind the complete loop not just the front of the loop.

Same as previous instructions and keep repeating until you have enough stitches.

How do I cast off in knitting?

Take a needle several sizes larger than the ones you have used for the knitting - so the loops will be larger and the edge looser, knit the first two stitches onto the larger needle then use the tip of the other needle to lift the first stitch over the second one and right off the needle, so it is looped over the second stitch, but is no longer on the needle.
Knit another stitch and repeat the lifting over. I f you are casting off all the stitches continue to the end of the row and then cut the yarn, pass the end of the yarn through the last stitch and draw it up.
If you are only casting off part of the row then move the last stitch onto the right size needle and continue knitting on the stitches left in the row.

How are you getting on? I'm just learning and I can't even cast on!! My stitches all stay on the front posts that are between the needles and I've no idea how to stop that. Would help if I had an instruction book.

I've got a gr8 gear toy sewing machine but no instructions. Can anyone help???

Had the same problem, couldn't find written instructions but if you search for "circular knitting machine cast on" (or off) on YouTube you'll find video demonstrations for a nearly identical machine. These worked for me.
