You've got it right - it's the dreaded nvidia chip failure. If you do replace the m/board ( not as expensive as some boards ) ensure the AMD processors heatsink fan remains clear to breathe - AMD processors run hot and this heat is what kills the nvidia chip. Sorry but the only repair because the GPU ( graphics chip ) is built into the m/board is a new m/board.

The cheapest place you will find a mother board is on eBay. Search for a mother board for your machine by searching with the service tag number or P/N number on the white tag on the back. You may find that it is cheaper to buy a used laptop on eBay rather than a mother board.
it should be under waranty seeing that the motherboard is malfunctioning again. normally the hardware will go out before the motherboard and seeing that its the same problem again mark the motherboard in a nice little place with a marker to insure they are not doing a repair and giving you back the same faulty board.
Generally this type of problem arises due to Battey. But in u r case it appears like a Mother Board Problem. So u better to visit nearer HP/compaq Service Station u can extende warranty for another year if ur previous extended warranty expired within 6 months...there is a provision in HP Customer Support.
Apart from this You can buy third party Mother boards compatible for V 2000 in other Laptop Acessories store

I suppose that you are using Windows XP. I was also facing the same problem with the same notebook, took it to HP Service Center and they told me that this laptop is not compatible with windows XP. I installed windows Vista and downlaoded the drivers from http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=3632144&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en and it is working fine now.
I have the same problem that my screen splits into 6 but occasionally screen comes normally. I gave to HP service center and they told me to change my mother board. I was worrying about the cost of Mother Board bcoz it costs 1/3 of my purchased rate and also my warranty was expired just 2 months before.
So, I tried some way to fix this temporarily, while screen comes normally, I went to Safe Mode, it works fine. So, I got an idea, it works in less hardware access, I think, how it works when removing NVIDIA display driver. So, I removed it. Now, it works fine but there is a difference in display but that doesnt matter while comparing previous.
I'm still searching permanent solution. I'm planning to change the Hardware of NVIDIA card. Lets see,
You should be able to find an HP service provider in your area either by looking in the phonebook or by calling HP directly. You may even be able to order the part directly from HP. You will have to pay for it, however, and if you choose not to do the work yourself, will also be billed for the labor.
