Question about Sony Mavica MVC-FD95 Digital Camera

Sony Mavica FD95 Camera

This camera has been a delight in the three years I've had it.  Recently, every floppy disk I put in brings up "DISK PROTECT" on the screen and will not allow a photo.   These are new formatted disks and I have not slid on their builtin protector.  I use only Imation 2HD IBM formatted disks.  I have gone through the menus a dozen times and have not been able to find anything to correct this problem.  I'd deeply appreciate help.  This camera has become a long trusted friend and I'd hate to see it go.  -  Fred

This is a common problem with the Mavica FD95. There is a little switch in the drive slot to sense the write protect tab on the disk.

If you hold open the drive door without a disk in, you should see this switch where the write protect tab goes. Try operating the switch with a matchstick a few dozen times to attemp to clean the contacts. If that doesn't work then Very carefully let a drop of switch cleaner run into the switch and try operating it a few times then let it dry. Failing that you might want to open the camera to get to the terminals on the switch and test it with a multimeter.

If the switch is faulty and a replacement is not availble then you could just short(or disconnect) it to fool the drive into thinking any disk is writable.

Good luck

How to shut off disk protect

The write protection is on the floppy diskette itself. Make sure the little sliding latch is covering the hole on the right side of the diskette. If you see through two holes on the diskette it is on write protect.

Try setting your picture size to a smaller size. If your pictures are used mostly for being viewed on a computer, or for smaller print sizes like 3x5 or 4x6, you should not lose any quality. The smaller file size does not take as long to write to the disk.

Keeps saying disk protect

These old electronics tend to be tempermental, just like my old 1988 Nintendo....when the problem persisted, I held the disk slot open and went Nintendo-style on it (blow the dust out of the disk slot). That cleaned off the disk reader. I put the disk in, and it started reading the disk instantly.

The first thing to check is the floppy disk itself is not protected, what this means is on the left/right corner of the floppy disk is a little tab that can be moved up or down. Check to make sure the disk is not locked (usually symbolized by a lock symbol on the disk). If that does not work, you might have a bad floppy drive

FD95/memory-what do I need?

You need the MSAC-FD2M Floppy Disk Adapter. It's probably going to be hard to find these days.
