Question about Dell Studio 17 (1749) Laptop black - Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit, Intel Core i3-350M 2.26GHz, 3 gb... PC Notebook
Okay so i have this dell studio 17 laptop which boots up and everything but as soon at the dell logo pops up the screen starts to flicker and shortly after the computer shuts down. I don't think its the screen itself cause i plugged in a monitor via vga and it did the same thing. I'm not sure what else it could be. also the computer is running straight off the power cord and not the battery because the battery does not get recognized by the computer and when i plug in the cord i get 3 short blinks from the power light. is there any way i can get this back up and running? thanks
The two things I've dealt with in cases such as yours is I have sometimes failed to have a 110v outlet really, actually working. The other problem was when I wouldn't be patient enough to plug in the computer and let it charge for a while BEFORE attempting to start it.. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know for sure, but, in your case, I might also suspect a bad battery... that was sucking up too much charging juice... to allow the computer to start up and run.

You have a ground fault issue in the DC JACK.
There are escentially 4 circuits in the jack and one is not making contact.
1: Negative Charge circuit (outter ring)
2: Negative Run circuit (outter ring)
3 Positive (Inner Ring)
4: Signal (center pin)
I believe the negative charge circuit (outter ring) is not making contact internally. Typically what happens on that model DC Jack is the tension contact metal becomes fatigued, and does not touch the outter ring.
This could come from Heat causing early fatigue of the metal.
Or normal wear, the metal has simply worn out from regular insert/removal.

The flashing orange light indicates that the battery isn't working properly. This could be due to either the battery being worn out, or a battery fail safe has kicked in. Either way the battery will need to be replaced in order to fix this. Since the performance isn't quite right, I'm going to say that a fail safe has engaged, you can confirm this by running the computer without the battery and see how the performance is. You will need to replace the battery, and the replacement will make the machine work properly.

I HAVE POSTED THE SOLUTION FOR THIS BEFORE. ON THE LEFT REAR THE SCREW FROM BOTTOM OF UNIT TO THE LCD. LOOK INSIDE WHERE THE TOP AND BOTTOM GO TOGETHER YOU WILL SEE A PIECE OF ALUMINUM TAPE IF IT STICKS OUT PAST THE BOSS TOWARD THE PC BOARD. WHEN YOU MOVE LCD THERE IS ENOUGH FLEX FOR IT TO SHORT TO PC BOARD. TRIM THIS OFF AND YOUR PROBLEMS WILL BE SOLVED. CAUTION REMOVE BATTERY AND UNPLUG FROM AC BEFORE THE ABOVE. BOBBY

The center of the connetor for the AC adapter to the system has a very fine wire that is the sensing wire for the battery charger. It ID's the type adapter connected to the system. If the wire is bent or broken, the system cannot ID the adapter and the battery charger will not function.
If the wire is bent or broken, then replace the AC adapter. ALso try a different adapter and see if the issue occurs with it. If the issue happens with more than one adapter or if this adapter functions normmaly on another system, then the motherboard will need to be replaced.
