yes its an original xp disk. i was able to go to the setup menu then go into the start up and change it around. but know it wont let me. i can put a disk in the drive and it acts like it wonts to run it then stops.i wouldnt care to wipe it out . thats what i planned on doing anyway and then putting xp on it.i can get it to the safemode menu and done tried all of them and nothing. it keeps saying that 2000 file is missing and stops there. it comes on says ibm thinkpad and beeps twice, then goes black comes right back on with the thinkpad written diagonally in background and says error 08611 i then press ESC it beeps and goes black comes right back on with black background top left displays 8611 = ok with slash threw it then arrow pointing to IBM booklet. then i hit F1 it goes black comes right back on and says its starting windows, i hear the hard drive workin then displays Disk I/O error; status = 00001000 windows could not start cause followinf file is missing or corrupt: \WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM. ID BE HAPPY TO ERASE AND JUST GET XP ON IT. any help would be greatly appreciated. i beleave im gonna have to take this on to a repairshop, by now ive usually done solved the prob.

That is correct.. IF you are using windows 2000 the files are NOT the same as the files under XP.. Your best bet is to EITHER install the complete XP or find the win2k installation disk,, even an upgrasde disk for win 200 can be found probably around 100.00. IF the system isn't booting from your XP disk IS Your disk an ORIGINAL or a copy of the original?.. If for example your CD rom is drive E then see if you can find a win XP emergency boot disk and access the CDROM goto e:\windows\i386 then run the setup program, many cases this will overwrite your existing OS.. but do so at your OWN RISK I will not be accountable if you lose any of your important files.. some win98 emergency boot disks can access the cdrom but you may have to make certain additions to the autoexec.bat and/or config.sys files. be careful when using DOS because you can completely delete EVERYTHING on the HDD if you use the right command(s). As A DOS BABY I have performed many lazarus miracles but I have been using dos since the early 70's

Hi, i have a thinkpad 600e with corrupted os (missing ntldr for sp2). i tried repairing with cd but cd wont boot (cd is bootable though). it keeps restarting. my boot sequence is already set to cd first....

Try to reinstall only the service pack.
What OS are you using?
visit Microsoft's downloads center and download service pack 2 for your OS i.e, Windows XP or Windows 7, then reinstall.
That should fix the problem

Thank you for using Fixya,

You might have multiple problems. Are you sure the CD-Rom works? It is not uncommon for CD-ROM drives to go bad in laptops. If it was bad before and then the hard drive became corrupt all before it was given to you then you would have no way of knowing. This would explain why you do not get the Press Any Key to Boot From CD on boot.

There is no doubt that the hard drive image is corrupt, so the first thing I would check is the CD drive and go from there.

Formatting IBM Thinkpad 600E

I know you can't boot from the Windows 98 CD, and probably not from Windows 2000 either. It is possible to turn the the Windows 98 bootable floppy into a bootable CD, but I think you would be much better of trying to install Linux.

Probably the display driver is messed up. Best option is to reinstall the operating system.

An alternative is to have a Linux-savvy friend try to boot it up
with a Linux-live rescue CD to see if that fixes the display problem and maybe to salvage your personal data from the hard drive.

Thinkpad 600E

IBM Thinkpad error code 19990301 is a Hard-Disk sector problem. Basically your hard-drive is faulty and you need to replace it. This is why it wont boot; because the area of the hard-drive that stores data is damaged.
