Question about Maytag 25.6 cu. ft. Wide-By-Side Refrigerator with PuriClean II Ice and Water
I have a Maytag side by side model MSD2756DEW that was not cooling properly, similar to problems as others are having. I called a repairman and he came over and replaced the advance defrost circuit board. This happened one other time also so it was no surprise. He advised to leave fridge unplugged for 24 hours to let ice melt then turn back on. Here is where the problem is. When I plugged it back in, it started for about 5 seconds and shut down. now, when I plug it in, it wants to run, but still shuts down after about 2 seconds. I replaced the run capacitor thinking that this would solve it, but it did not. I replaced the relay overload kit and that did not do it. There was one other relay that was in a clear shell so you could see the coil and the contacts. I am not sure what it does, but I decided it could not hurt to replace that also. it still does not work. The symptoms are the same. Compressor acts like it wants to start for a very brief time then shuts down. I am scratching my head on this one. By the way, after repeated calls to my repairman, he has not returned my calls. He does work for my employer and is a good guy. We have not seen him around lately either. I hope he is ok! I really need my fridge. It's been 2 weeks now. Anybody got some ideas? All are appreciated!

The most likely fault is a problem with the defrost cycle. The most likely is the defrost heater which should be a solid bar which is located directly underneath the coil. If you are capable then you can generally unplug the connectors for the heater and check that you have a resistance across the ends if the heater is faulty it will be open circuit. If it is not open circuit then it could be the defrost sensor or defrost timer at fault. You can also generally tell if the heater is warped or cracked. Hope this is of some help.

If you jumped the defrost board and it went into defrost then that board is bad. I assume by "freezes up" you are talking about the evaporator is frosting up? That defrost board puts it into defrost automatically. If you have to jump it to get it go into defrost then the board is not doing its job.

overload switch for sure, stops the fridge once you replace that,if it doesnt defrost change the bi-metal

you have a defrost problem, could be bad adaptive defrost board,t-stat heater, when you open freezer door listen for fan if fan is blowing check the t-stat,look at it and see if it has a buldge on it,sometime you can see this and tell it's bad, you'll need a meter to read out the heater and other parts to see whats bad, might be a good idea to call a tech to do this, when you find problem you have to melt everything out again
