    Hi joecoolvette

Sorry about not having enough info in the discription.
The issue is that my lacie external drive 500gig is made up of two wd2500 drives. One of the PCB boards failed (no power). I have since replaced the PCB board on the drive in question, but did not record the orignal jumper settings when doing the diags on the drive.
The actual fault happned over a 2 years ago, but my system unit and my backup nas devices were stolen...along with years of photos of the family.
I have tried the master /slave ... Cable select.... and slave master combinations, so I am really tring to find out what it should be. Both drives have single partition on them..I could try and "mirgate" the partitions to other drives outside of the lacie enclosure but I cannot remember it the drive is formated with NTFS (99.9% sure it is.)

    any help would be great.
    regards,
    stephen

Master (M) on the harddrive that came with the computer, Slave, (S, or SL), on the 2nd harddrive.

Don't see M, S, and CS, on the label of the harddrive? (CS is Cable Select)
Sometimes it's right on the edge, where the 40 pin flat ribbon cable plugs in. It will be letters raised in the plastic, of the harddrive body.

To find where to set the jumpers for these harddrives, I suggest you look at the label. Since you had the Printed Circuit board replaced, I'm guessing you know who made it, and what the model number is.

Some harddrive manufacturers,
1.Western Digital
2.Maxtor, (Maxtor is owned by Seagate now)
3.Seagate
4.Hitachi
5.NEC (No longer in business)
6.Quantum, (sold out to Maxtor)

Here are three links that are videos, and may help with setting jumpers, and setting up those IDE harddrives. (IDE is also referred to as EIDE, ATA, and PATA)
(If you have SATA harddrives, do not touch the jumpers, if any are present! These are for the factory. With a SATA harddrive, you can plug it/them, into ANY available SATA header, {Connector}, on the motherboard. Doesn't matter!)

The same control PCB is used for the refrigerator and freezer, but the setting of the PCB is 1 if fitted in a freezer and 0 if fitted in a refrigerator. Does anybody know how to change this setting?

Look for a jumper much like the kind you find on Hard drives and computer motherboards. If there is one. there will be indicators printed on the board.

Due to short circuit the board on my hitachi HD got burned. Can i still make hard disk work?

If the PCB board is burned, there is a possibility that your data is still in the drive and that the drive can still work. However, at the very least you will need a new PCB board from Hitachi.

The circuitboard on my hard drive has fryed and need a new one

Because of this customized firmware, however, it's not possible to switch out a PCB board in many cases; of course, this varies depending on the manufacturer of a drive. For instance, some older drives have the same basic information on two PCB boards of the same model, provided that both drives were made at about the same time, before more unique adaptives were programmed into the next line of drives. If one of the PCBs fails, there is some chance of making a recovery by simply swapping the boards of the two drives. However, hard drives have contained "customized" firmware on at least an occasional basis since they've become a consumer product, so the chances of a straight "board swap" working are very low. In addition, because of the unique adaptives, it is highly possible to damage a drive further by the placement of a foreign PCB. Data recovery companies must rebuild the firmware information in many situations when the PCB of a drive fails. In addition, occasionally PCB failures cause damage to other hard drive components, such as the heads of the drive (and subsequently the platters, in certain situations). Professional data recovery companies have special processes to treat these problems as well. If you think that your hard drive has a problem with its PCB board, it's important that you don't try to operate the drive any further or try switching out the PCB board with another drive's. Get your hard drive to a reputable data recovery company immediately for an evaluation. A good data recovery company will be able to quickly diagnose the drive's issues and let you know what your options are from that point. http://www.onepcbsolution.com/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=du0Qd_3wFWM

Power comes from the power supply. Check yellow and black and red and black. You need both 5v and 12v. Are you sure you have the jumper set correctly for the application? Master or single - master with slave present or some computers require CS (cable select)

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80GB 6Y080L YAR41BW0 internal hard drive not working think it might be the PCB Board not working.

It's possible that you're correct.

However, finding a Maxtor drive with an identical PCB is not going to be easy. Once you do, you can disconnect the "spinning" part of the disk-drive away from the PCB, and then swap PCB, and see if you can then QUICKLY(!) copy all 80GB to a "new" disk-drive.

Slave jumper settings for a 2.5 Hitachi DK23DA-20F hard drive

Most hard drives I've come across have tiny little letters on the PCB next to the jumpers that say MA SL CS which are for master, slave, and cable select. If that doesn't work, go to Hitachi's website and search their support section. There is a diagram of the jumpers for that drive out there somewhere. Good luck!

WD3200JS Electrical failure? No spinning, overheating of board

Hi Indro,

HEat issues like that can be caused either by a failure on the PCB or internally. Remove the PCB board and inspect it, if it's an issue I have seen occasionally you will have a hard time removing the PCB as it will have blown out a chip near the contact point for the drive and will be somewhat fused to the padding between the PCB and the drive chassis.

If this is the case a new board runs about 50% chance of fixing the issue, try finding one on eBay and replacing it. If that fails or if there's no noticable failure on the PCB, chances are the failure is internal and you will need the help of a professional facility with a clean room to get your files back. If this is the case and you don't mind spending a few bucks for the file, respond with your location(Country, State and City) and I will refer you to a nearby facility that has the appropriate equipment to assist you.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris
