Can you tell me the default IP address for this unit as I have lost the pass word and need to reset the unit

If your computer is plugged into the router, you can easily get the router's IP address by going to your command prompt and typing "ipconfig" without the quotes.

Command Prompt is under Start (or Orb if using Win7 or Vista) > All Programs > Accessories

After typing "Ipconfig" and hitting return, command prompt should display something like this:

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . :
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . :
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
Ethernet adapter PdaNet Broadband Connection:
Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

The router's address is your "Default Gateway." You should be able to put that address into an Internet Explorer window and it will bring up the configuration interface.

Tips for Media state Media disconnected or Network cable Unplugged

Wired adapter or NIC Local Area connection if says "Network cable unplugged" or if in the command prompt if you type "ipconfig" and if you come agross an error message "Media state media disconnected" then it means there is some problem with a physical device or connections

Solutions: 1. Try with a different port on the switch or the router. It could be the fault with the Router/Switch port 2. Try a different Ethernet cable. It could be the fault with the Ethernet cable 3. Try with a different NIC or a different computer. It could be the fault with the NIC

Hi I'm looking to install a DG834G router to give wireless access but the only instal disc is from AOL and I'm not with them anymore, I have tiscali broadband. How do install the router if it won't plug...

Try NOT using any install disk.

Turn the TISCALI router off.
Turn the NetGear off.

Use an Ethernet cable to connect from the LAN port on the TISCALI router to the WAN port on the router.

Use another Ethenet cable to connect from one LAN port on the router to the network-port on your computer.

Turn the TISCALI on. Wait 60 seconds.
Turn the NetGear on. Wait 60 seconds.
Restart your computer.
Click Start
Click Run
Type CMD
Press Enter
Press Enter
Look for output like: Default Gateway....
Note that the '123.456' will be some other numbers.
Start Internet Explorer.
Type (substitute the current values)
Login to the web-server running on the router.
Run the "Wireless Networking Setup Wizard"
to configure a SSID, an encryption-level (use 'WPA')
and a password for your network.
After the router restarts, you should be able to get wireless access, using the SSID and password that you configured your router to use.

How to enable WPA security. i tried to enter the http://www. but the page is not showing theres no admin pls

Try - you don't enter www. in front of an IP. Check that this is actually your routers IP address by doing Start > Run. Type "cmd" without the quotes and press Ok. In the black window that pops up, type "ipconfig" without the quotes. You'll see something like this:

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\root>ipconfig

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . :
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . :
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

Ethernet adapter Bluetooth Network Connection:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

C:\Documents and Settings\root>

If your Default Gateway Value is then you're good to go, otherwise this value will be what your routers address will probably be.

Wireless Netnotwork Connectivity issues

At last, I have finally resolved the issue, sometimes the solution is so somple that you totally miss the solution. It was as simple as the Windows Firewall ( switch it on ), I have a Mcafee security center protecting my network and it wouldn't let me connect with additional protection. Also, I entered the wrong mac address on the routers (access control) settings. I'm now on the internet. Obviously I have to big up Mcafee for excellent security controls. So if anybody else ever has the same problem follow these simple steps.

  1. Check all of the settings that I described in the original question
  2. Make sure Firwall settings are correct (& active).
  3. Check your routers homepage ( access control truly works).
  4. Make sure you you enter the correct MAC address (use the MAC address of the wireless network adapter, that's what connect you to a network) i.e. 00-01-a2-11-22

Have lost/can't remember the security code to wirelessly connect to my netgear DG 834G

Can you connect to the router via ethernet?

If so assuming you havent changed the routers address connecting to from your web browser should get you into your routers admin page.

Once you have entered the user name and password click the Wireless link from teh main menu where you will be able to see the relevent key and or change it if required.

If you need the manuals you can download from here.
