I found the screw on the top counter sunk under the foil in the middle top side of drive, I have not done any hardware data recovery before, so if I remove platter and place in a working drive same model it should work? is there any other tricks?

Thanks for your help Joe, I really appreciate that

Generally there is a small screw, (Or two of them), that go through a thin metal tab, affixed to the harddrive. They usually have a strip of thin cloth, that you pull on, to ease the harddrive out, after the screw is removed. Sometimes it's hard to see.

I have to give you this information in a generic form, because laptops differ in the way they keep the harddrive in. I better go ahead, and tell you, that this specific info may not be available, for your particular laptop. However, you may want to come back, and post the laptop manufacturer name, and model number, in case it is. (I've worked on many, and have a lot of information available, but am being straight up front with you, that I do not have info available for every laptop out there. Just trying to help, is all)

NO SIR! DO NOT OPEN THE HARDDRIVE!

I didn't ask for clarification, because I thought I understood your question. In hindsight, I should have asked! I thought you were trying to remove an HD out of a laptop. With a desktop computer it's fairly easy to see, how to remove.

Your 80GB HD probably has 3 or 4 platters inside. EACH platter has one arm above it, and one arm below it. Each arm has a Read/Write head. These arms can travel back, and forth across the platters, at up to HUNDREDS of times a Second!

The platters, motor that spins the spindle for the platters, arms and read/write heads, and the mechanism that moves the arms, are encased in a sealed compartment. Once you breach, (Open), that compartment, you will have given your harddrive the 'Kiss
    of Death'!

The harddrive is assembled in a 'Clean Room', that would make Nasa jealous! Technicians have to don special suits, (That almost resemble biological germ scientist's suits), and walk through a series of special air jets, to further rid the chance of airborne contamination. Once this part of the harddrive is assembled, it's sealed. The only access for the atmosphere, is through a filter on the outside of the harddrive. It's found by locating the sticker that states, "Do not block this hole"

Once opened, the inside of the harddrive is exposed to microscopic dust, and foreign matter. It will quit working. It maybe a matter of hours, or a few days. (One fingerprint on a platter, will wipe out a large amount of data. Your fingertip's skin contains acid)

It may be that the Printed Circuit Board for your harddrive is kaput, instead of bad sectors on the platter/s.

How do I disable the "SECURITY FREEZE LOCK" on my SATA hard disk?

You can\'t get back the data from encrypted hard drive whatsoever. There are various recovery utility that claims to successfully recover data from the encrypted drive but none of them would actually able to recover files.

One of the best recovery software of all time with which, I\'ve had quite good experience so far is, Stellar Phoenix Partition Recovery. You can try it yourself and see if it helps you a bit:

Trying to figure out if my acomdata 80 GB Hard Drive still works, its been along time since I"ve used it, was wondering if I got the fire wire connections right, Are you supposed to use two fire...

just one firewire cable will work.
if the unit doesn't power on you can pull the hard drive out and put it in another external hard drive case usb/firewire/sata.
if it doesn't work then the only option to recover the data is to send it to a 3rd party hard drive recovery.

Hello, my hitachi travelstar harddrive doesn't

Unfortunately when hard drives get to this state they are usually toast and if working at all on their last leg. You may be able to recover some of your data using a professional service otherwise a new hard drive is in order.

Hitachi's Travelstar hard drives are excellent and I recommend the following replacements:

For SATA (Serial ATA interface):
320GB:

500GB:

Hope this helps and let me know if you need further assistance..

My Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320 GB SATA Hard Drive is less than 2 years old and has crashed, any fixes?

Hard drives are only designed to last 3 to 5 years. Most hard drive manufacturers only warranty them for 1 year.
For whatever reason yours has died.

Backing up your data is imperative.

If you need to recover data from this hard drive, there are places online that you can send the drive to and they can recover the data on your hard drive. This can cost you a bundle though. If the data is not necessary, all you can do is buy a new one and reinstall your operating system.

you might want to use a professional service to recover the data. Its not really an easy process and I dont suggest opening up the hard drive since the parts inside are very sensitive.
