Question about Coffee Makers & Espresso Machines

4 Answers

My Krups coffee maker does not turn on. Clock works, timer works, but when it goes on, it beeps 3 times, then 3 more times, then just flashes gibberish. It's an FMF5.

I understand that normally it goes through 2 series of three beeps to indicated it's done. In my case, it's simply not done. It has not brewed anything.

  • rshrout May 24, 2009

Hey, it's a Krups FMF5. I'm able to set the clock and timer. Timer comes on, coffee machine goes not further, does not brew. It flashes a bunch of incomplete dashes, not numbers.

  • rshrout May 24, 2009

Programming works fine . . . clock and timer. Just does not come on, either with the timer or by pushing the on button. Does the beep thing twice and just flashes incomplete dashes, no readable numbers.

  • rshrout May 25, 2009

Yes . . .b==d. Nice idea, but if I can't get it to start, there's no way to run the solution through a brewing cycle to descale. Hmm.

Firstly try and remove and clean the water filter. Then manually descale the machine as good as possible.
Here is the descaling procedure from krups:
• Before descaling, remove the filter holder (k).
• You may use either the Krups descaling solution diluted in 8 ounces of water or 8 ounces of
white vinegar.
• Pour the solution or vinegar into water reservoir (b) and start the coffee machine (without
coffee).
• Allow half the liquid to run into the carafe, then switch off and let stand for 1 hour.
• Restart the coffee machine to complete the cycle.
• Rinse the coffee machine by running it through 2 full cylces with water only.
• On the timer models if the display continues to read “CALC“ repeat the process again.
I understand you cant activate the machine at the moment to descale but if you use the white vinegar solution it may free somthing up in the water resivour. The problem sounds like a stuck water level sensor, if you can see if you can locate and free up this sensor.
Hope this info helps.

if the "gibberish looks like this...
b==d
the water sensor has failed.
It thinks there is no water in the reservoir.

Have you de-scaled the unit lately? the sensor may just be scaled up.

Hi

2 Series of Three beeps tells you that the coffee is ready. However, if it beeps on regular basis then you'll need to reprogram your timer. And, if reprogramming doesn't help the probably a fault in microcontroller control board of the coffee maker.

Also see this link for the manual to see how to reprogram the coffee maker--

    Hi

You need to programme your coffee machine as per the procedure given below:

    • Plug in your appliance: the display will light up briefly in blue, blink “8888“ and then remain fixed.

    • Press the O/I button if you wish to make coffee without using the programmable mode.

    • The display will light up in blue and alternately show “ON“ and the current time.

    • Press the O/I button to shut off the coffee machine. The display will no longer be lit.

    Setting and Adjusting the Clock

    • The machine must be “off“.

    • Press and hold the prog button (o) for 3 seconds: the hours will blink “88 _ _“.

    • Adjust the hours in steps by pressing the h/min button (n).

    • Press the prog button : the minutes will blink“ XX 88“.

    • Adjust the minutes in steps by pressing the h/min button.

    • Confirm the setting by pressing the prog button.

    Setting Auto On

This programs the coffee machine to start automatically at the set time each day.

    • Press the prog button (o) briefly : the display will blink “prog“ for about 1 second, followed by “8888“.

    • Press the prog button briefly: the hours will blink “88 _ _“.

    • Adjust the hours in steps by pressing the h/min button (n).

    • Press the prog button briefly: the minutes will blink “XX 88“.

    • Adjust the minutes in steps by pressing the h/min button .

    • Confirm the setting by pressing the prog button briefly:

    • The display (q) will show the time and a “ “.

    • Press the h/min button to cancel the programming.

Please do rate this solution as FixYa and revert for further assistance.

    Thanks

How do you set the minutes on the clock?

There are two ways to set the clock on your coffee maker. 1- When you initially plug in the coffee maker, the unit will beep and "12:00" will flash on the LCD display for a few seconds. Press immediately the h/min button (o) to set the current hour. If "12:00" starts to flash, press the PROG button (n) for a few seconds until the "12:00" flashes again. Then press the h/min button (o) to set the current hour. There are AM and PM indicators on the top right side of the LCD screen. To set the current minutes, press the PROG button (n) and then press the h/min button (o) until the correct minutes appear on the LCD display. After 5 seconds, the unit will beep and the time will stop flashing. 2- At any other time, you can set the clock or change the set time by pressing and holding the h/min button (o). The unit will beep and "12:00" will flash on the LCD display. Use the h/min button (o) to set the current hour. There are AM and PM indicators on the top right side of the LCD screen. To set the current minutes, press the PROG button (n) and then press the h/min button (o) until the correct minutes appear on the LCD display. After 5 seconds, the unit will beep and the time will stop flashing. Notes: Your clock has now been set and will continue to keep the correct time, even after the coffee maker has been shut off. Unplugging the coffee maker or a power failure will reset the clock to 12:00 AM. Repeat the instructions above to reset the clock

I had a similar problem. It stopped working mid-brew, then flashed 8888 incessantly and I couldn't get anything to respond. I unplugged, turned it upside down overnight to drain. Next day it worked fine and has been OK since.
