Question about Rainbow E series Canister Wet/Dry Vacuum

Open Question

Seperator Stuck to Rainbow E Series vacuum with Nut removed. If I put soapy water around the edge, how can I prevent the soapy water from going into the motor? Can it be done with a damp Cloth so there's no water to run into the motor? Would WD40 sprayed around the edge of the seperator help, with the seperator pressed in, so it won't go into the motor? What's the safest way to do this, to ensure that the motor will not be ruined? Please write to CanadianLowiss@shaw.ca or Call 604-530-5140 tomorrow morning around 9 a.m. to Noon Pacific standard Time. Please email your solutions and safety tips to Service@greatvacs.com, as well as to my mother Millie and I, at CanadianLowiss@shaw.ca

I Have an Older Rainbow (i think it's a d4)
my Old roommate ran it once without water.
it Still works now (with water), but
it's Very noisy on start up
Also I Can't seem to remove the separator (no instructions) but the nut at the end of it appears to free spin the motor when i try to turn it.
Can I Take this apart and Clean/lube it? And if so how? Or is this thing on its last legs? Thanks

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Rainbow E Series Canister Wet/Dry Vacuum. The Rainbow D4 is an older Rainbow Vacuum and the part where the separator is part of the armature, the separator should be able to be removed and that might be one of the things making noise. As normal maintenance the separator should be removed and cleaned after every use and re-installed, then place a newspaper or towel under the motor unit and turn on the Rainbow and spin the moisture out of the motor unit. This should be done every time you use it. Other wise the Rainbow has 3 fans in the bottom of the motor and if they are weak they will make noise from the motor unit as well. Watch out… the repair of the Rainbow D4 may exceed the cost of a new motor of which will solve your problem of noise and separator --- compare the cost and the labor and make a decision. If you have further questions please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer. . SOURCE: will not turn on after cleaning seperator

The reset is leaving it unplugged for about a half hour. Then give it a try. Make sure it is on the basin, as it will not turn on off of the basin.

SOURCE: The nut on the seperator on my e series is frozen

Do you have a friend who is a car or motorcycle mechanic? The acorn nut you refer to can be removed with the use of a small air impact wrench. Make sure the wrench is set to REMOVE (anti clockwise) the nut and give it a short burst. Never fails.

What to do when you are not able to take of the main motor seperator.

Sometimes the sepatator can get stuck on the Rainbow. Take a small flat screw driver and get under the outer lip of the separator and just pop it off.

Tip

Rainbow E series cannister wet/dry vacuum

When using a rainbow vacuum it is important not to overfill the water basin with water as it can splash up to high and cause problems at the seperator. The seperator is the metal piece that is located at the bottom of the unit when you take the water basin off it is up inside the cannister. This piece is one of the most important pieces in this machine as it is designed to bring in the air and dirt with out letting the dirt get past it as well as keeping the water out of it as well. Keeping the water level below the plastic marker in the middle of the water basin will help to keep this from happening. When you are done cleaning with your rainbow it is crucial that you remove the seperator by un doing the hand tightened nut at the bottom of it. Hold thr seperator in one hand and turn the bolt to the right. This is the opposite way to undo normal;nuts or bolts but because the separator spins at a high rate of speed it is what is called "reverse threaded".Once you get the nut off the seperator should just come right off easily by pulling it straight down. When you get it off you must take a toothbrush(provided when ou purchased) and you must scrub this clean in order to keep from any dirt or dust getting up into the motor.Scrub the seperator as well as the area that it covers up while installed.this needs to be done each and every time you finish with the machine as you do not want to leave it because it will become rusted right on and it can break the shaft if you have to turn it to hard and if the shaft breaks it can get very costly.Rainbow does not come with a manufactures warranty only a distributors warranty and if you can not find the dist. that sold you the unit you have no one to honor the warranty. This information is stated right in the users manual.my point is if anything goes wrong with it it is most likely going to come out of your pocket. Though the manufacturer is still available the distributor go in and out of business all the time so be aware.
You must also dump all the water every time you finish using your rainbow as it will cause condensation to get up in to the seperator and rust things together. do not store it with the basin that hols the water attached. I hope this will keep your rainbow's running longer and better for years to come.

I can get the acorn nut off the separator but cannot get the separator off the vacuum. Can I pryn it off, or will I break it?

It's probably stuck in place by dried-on fine dirt...if the nut has been removed, don't pry it, as it's made from light material to enable the high RPMs. Lightly spray soapy water around the edge, WHILE HOLDING IT WITH THE SEPARATOR DOWN so that the water won't run into the motor. Once the dried dirt's wet, it should be removable with a gentle twist or tap. Then clean the separator with a brush and soapy water and wipe down the bowl and canister, and dry it all with a soft cloth.

I have a Rainbow E series. The separator is broken. I removed the acron nut but the separator won't come off. Is it ok to pry it off from bottom?

It's ok to pry on it if you're careful. Tap it too, use a screwdriver handle and just go around it and tap judiciously. When you're prying, be sure that if something is going to break it's the separator and not the machine housing.

Clean the shaft well before putting the new separator on, it's a pretty close fit and you don't want crud in it, and be sure the threads are clean and dry before putting the acorn nut on.

Cleaning the separator

Try spraying something like WD40 around the shaft, then if you have to, use 2 small flat blades that will fit under the edge of the separator and keep working it until it pops loose. It is just crude and calcium from water that is keeping it on.
