Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

My PS3 will not read PS3 format discs.

I got my 80g PS3 a over a year ago. It is backwards compatable, but now It is only backwards compatible, It will not read PS3 games but PS2 games still work fine. Sony wants to charge $159 to fix it. I want to know if there are any other solutions.

Mine came like that. There are two versons of the 80 gig. The one I have is backwards compatable. It is not an update, its part of its hardware.

Eventually, they will release a new console or a patch to solve this problem but I think you would be better off paying them, honestly. There are no classes offered in any college or training institution that deal specificly with playstation. Their operating system is still brand new and nobody really knows anything about it. There is no command line interface, so it's impossible to get to any roots or shell for that matter. I am curious though, how did you get it to work with PS2 games? I've got the same model with all the latest updates and I still cannot play the older games.

Ps2 Disc won't respond to a Ps3 when inserted.

Only the first version of the PS3 had PS2 backwards compatibility, They did make a special edition Metal Gear Solid version with it included but other than that no other PS3 will play PS2 discs... No matter what Add-On you install.

Cannot play ps3, switch on, then flashing red light appears and can do nothing.

You have the infamous YLOD, aka. Yellow Light of Death. This is the number 1 cause of pS3's dying. It is an overheating issue linked to your CPU and GPU (the processor chips) You will need to find a local PS3 repair shop who can repair this. Do not try to attempt repairs seen on the internet yourself as some would suggest. You could make things much worse and render the unit totally unresponsive. The repair process takes about 3 hours.

IT CAN BE FIXED*

IS THERE A DISC STUCK INSIDE?

If you have a unit that is not backwards compatible, any non 60g or 80g then you can retrieve your disc.

Power off the unit using the toggle switch on the back. Hold down the 'eject' button and turn the toggle switch back from off to on. This will run a fan test and eject your disc. Remember, this will only work on the 20, 40g models. Not the backwards compatible units with the 4 usb port holes and the memory card slots.

I have a PS3 80g. No warranty. Trying to repair myself. The disc drive wont take in discs. So I think I just need to replace the drive. But I need one that will be backwards compatible. I'm not sure how to...

http://www.llamma.com/PS3/ this site should provide some of the information you need. however, for a PS3 to be back compatable, it has to have had a PS2 built into it. changing the drive may not give it back compatability.
