SOURCE: dropped a WD passport drive, now it won't load. HELP!

Unfortunately, these drives are not made to be dropped.

It sounds like it was damaged by the drop which could have rendered the read/write heads inoperable or mis-aligned.

Contact Western Digital for a warranty replacement.

SOURCE: wd passport

I would suggest an externally AC powered USB hub. Try the D-Link DUB-H4 High Speed USB 2.0 4-Port Hub. Read the reviews for any other hub you might choose.

SOURCE: My PC is not recognizing my WD Passport 120GB USB external drive.

I had the same issue. Its not a power issue because it shows up in device manager. Heres what I did.

Right-click on my computer and click Manage>Disk Management

Your drive should show up there. Right-click on it. If explore is not grayed out, assign a drive letter to it and you should then be bale to see it in my computer.

In my case explore was grayed out. I had to click on the option to format the drive. After re-formatting the passport explore was available. I then assigned a drive letter to it and I have access again.

I guess somehow using it on multiple computers srcewed up the file-system on it. I was using it between windows and linux.

This fixed my problem.

I am begging someone to help me PLEASE.I have WD Passport Ultra, I ACCIDENTALLY removed access to 'everyone' in Security. Then Passport turned to NTFS and is now 'Local File F:.Help how do I repair?

First off don't freak your data is still there. If you were to plug that drive into a Linux computer you simply copy all the data. Anyhow in windows it sounds like you just need to take back ownership of the drive. so right click on the drive in Windows then Properties click on the Security Tab and hit that Advanced button. Then click on the Owner tab and click on edit. Then click on Other users or groups and add your user back. and put a check in the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects. I think that will do the trick.

Wd will not trasnfer files read only

Read only is a file attribute. There is read and modify, and full control. You would have to change the attribute if you have the right permissions (administrator). To change the permissions you would have to right click on the file, go to the security tab on top and change what is allowed.

Are you dragging and dropping files from the WD passport to a folder on your computer? If so which folder? It may be that you are trying to copy the files into a Windows system directory.
Try dragging and dropping the files to a folder on your Desktop or under My Documents.

Please leave feedback for this solution, thanks.

My wd passport is set to read only under sharing and permissions how do i fix that?

Is this a Windows, Mac, or Linux / Unix system?

Sometimes you need to uninstall the drivers and reinstall, reboot and all is OK (i've seen this in Win7).

Try to check WD's forum's for some info specific to your passport drive.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure you have the necessary NTFS file system permissions:
    1. In Windows NT Explorer, right-click the file, and then click Properties.
    2. On the Security tab, click Permissions.
    3. In the Type Of Access box, click Change.
  2. If your permissions are correct but you still cannot gain access to the file, use Systems Internals' Handle utility to troubleshoot the issue with this file. The Handles utility lists information about open handles and files. To obtain this utility, download it from the following Systems Internals Web site:

My PC is not recognizing my WD Passport 120GB USB external drive. I used just few days ago and connected the usb cable to my computer and the WD Passport drive and not recognized on my 2 laptop and 2 other...

I have the 80GB WD passport and it suddenly stopped working one day.  The unit lights up but nothing else.  Finally I cracked the case open and found, as I suspected, that the drive is simply a SATA laptop drive with a SATA-to-USB conversion card built in.  I suspected that the card was **** so I disconnected it and used a USB hard drive adapter ( and I can read/write to the drive just fine.  Best part is that the adapter I use has its own power supply so I'm not pulling juice through the USB cable for a SATA drive.
Even though mine "works" again I don't recommend these drives to anyone.  They're just not sturdy enough or well designed.
