SOURCE: Sony CFD-G500 cd player
There is an inherent problem with this unit that is not the reader. I noticed that the red light which comes on when the super base is activated will sometimes flash while the unit is first trying to read the CD. It seems to be in sync with the disc spinning motor of the CD player. I have repaired a couple of these by checking and resoldering poor quality solder joints on the CD sub board and a few on the main circuit board. But this has not repaired all of them. Sony need to look into this.

SOURCE: Does not detect CD in drive.
do you have it apart enough to view the CD transport mechanism ? if i so is the CD spinning up ?
over time the laser brightness diminishes and is not eluminating the cd proporly, there is a brightnes controll on the laser assembly, this can be ajuusted to a small degree to restore oporation, mark the original position of the control, the controll is located on a small pcboard where the plug enters the laseser asembely, turn the controll clockwise only about 5 to 10 percent, now atempt to read a good known cd, if it reads, leave it, if not turn the controll counter clock by 5 to 10 persent of the original poition, now try the cd again, if it works leave it, if not the laser may be defective and needs replacing, all this is asuming that the lense is cleen so prior to ajustment cleen the lense, also insure the lense is in place, some lenses have fallen off in my past experiances, and may be rateling around inside the unit, don`t lose it, you can very carefully glue it back in place using crazy glue, the assembely is quite easy to replace, you will see when you have it apart, if you can find a new one for a reasonable price this may be an option for you, one other thing, observer the carage, note if it seems to slide tho the center and then position itself a small portion away from the center this happens only when the unit is trying to read a CD , if so good, if not this may be due to a defective home switch used to position the laser over the appropriate track to read the directory of the CD, you can see the switch, and can be easily replaced, you will know how when you see it, that's what i know so now you know, good luck
