Question about Compaq Computers & Internet

Blank screen on bootup

The notebook will power on but won't boot Windows Vista, just black screen. No cursor. Last time notebook was on, the touchpad did not operate. I shut down the note book by holding down the power button. The next day, black screen. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Make sure that the video output of the laptop isn't set to go to an external screen by plugging one in if possible.

If the system will not boot into safe mode, you will most likely have to reinstall Windows. You can also try the "Last known good configuration" boot option from the F8 boot menu, I find this doesn't work most of the time, but worth a shot. Be sure to back up your data before you reinstall your operating system.

Under present circumstances you shall first try to boot through last good known configuration. If that is not working then you shall get a disk of operating system and boot through that particular CD and try the repair option if you need the full proceedure then kindly do let me know the operating system which you are using at present.

Black screen w/blinking cursor

So.. you can select safe mode? Or you turn it on and it is resuming into the blank screen?

If the latter. Unplug the power, pull the battery out for 20 seconds or so. Then put it all back together and try booting up.

The Acer Recovery CDs do not set the Boot flag on the hard drive. I had to manually set the boot flag to on using GPARTED Live. After restarting using the GPARTED CD, you can manage the flags under the partition drop down and click on the Boot flag. After exiting GPARTED, I rebooted the laptop and no more black screen....fixed!!
I hope this helps others.
