I have the same problem with mine, push with your left hand against the plastic on the left side of the handle, and with your right hand open the latch, I don't know why it works but it does. At least on mine.

PointsProblem with 1998 Jeep Cherokee Grand 2WD
I have a 2002 olds bravada. When back hatch opens
best is to post to the Buick forum. not jeep.
and wow , that is a nasty set of symptoms, a wiring short.
or what key wont turn.?
Your Grand Cherokee has a small pop off panel on the inside of the rear hatch trim...after carefully removing this panel reach inside the opening and you will find a release cable...pull on this cable and the hatch latch should release...then try lubricating the latch at all contact points, and the mechanism itself...if the latch does not release the next try, then you will need to replace this latch...this is a dealer or salvage yard part...your least costly replacement will be through the salvage yard market...some salvage yards are now on-line, and will ship the part to you. Hope this helps.
Sounds like your security system module may have shorted out. Also the sensors on the lock mechanisms in the doors may be bad. I also have a 93 Grand Cherokee and the sensor in the rear hatch went bad on the lock. I now have to unlock it with the key using only the drivers door or unlock it with the keyless entry remote to unarm the security system.
don't know if this is going to be any help at all. But we purchased our 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee a year ago and I just now learned that the rear window even opens. Did you find the switch that makes it pop open? If not it is just under the ridge under the window but above the handle to open the hatch. You just put your hand on it and push upwards. Hope this helps!! ALSO, THE JEEP HOLD PRESSURE WHEN OPENING IT..NEXT TIME GIVE IT A LTIILE PUSH ON THE TAILGATE LID WHILE PULLING THE HANDLE..IT WORKS GREAT ON THIS ONE. EVEN AFTER THE FIRST OWNER BROKE OFF THE DANG KEY.. HOPE IT HELPS
*I went by body shop for this same type issue with a 98 grand cherokee * the body shop guy removed the plastic sheild and adjusted a cable that interacts with the locking mechanism, took 5 seconds, cost me $20 for his time, works good as new.
I just had the same problem with my 1995.. believe me its a pain! by the way on the driver side below the steering wheel close to the door there should be a hidden pink (or any color) plastic box which basically controlls the cars security system... i removed it and i was good to go...try that... the only thing though is that you wont be able to lock the doors automaticaly, ull have to do it manually
Check to see if you have inadvertantly hit the push switch on the rear dome lite. Click it once and try
your lites again..I had this happen on my 93 jeep and that was the problem.
This is kind of tricky. OK let's start, you have to crawl into the rear
hatch area from the inside of the car. You'll have to pull the rear
panel off the hatch, a screwdriver between the panel and hatch near the
window will work. There might be 2 screws on the panel you could take
out. The trick is to pull the panel far away enough to stick your arm
down towards the latch and release it by hand. We did this at the
dealer all the time.
