Car does not recognize gear shifts

I have a 2006 BMW X5. When I put the car into any gear the gears are not recognized on the cluster/dashboard and the car would not move. After several attempts the car would not start.

WHen moving the gear selector, could you feel the vehicle engaging the gears?
The vehicle may not start as it thinks the selector is in gear not in park.
It sounds like a selector switch issue.
WIth accessories switched on, place car in reverse (without enging going) and see if reverse lights are on.

Does the shifter feel very loose? you may have a loose / broken gear linkage (unlikely, but possible).

When was the last time you had the tranny fluid and filer changed? I hear that they recommend changing it at 60,000. This model has extensive electronic sensors and interface controls on the engine and trans axle (nothing is simple anymore... :( ). Just from what you described, i would think that perhaps there is a relay or sensor connected to the trans axle that is not functioning properly ( especially when cold ). Since you have to restart the engine when warm to get it to work, it makes me think a relay is being re-set when you re-start the car. The car should shift properly whether cold or warm. I hear that you will have problems shifting if the regular 60,000 mile changes are not performed on the trans-axle fluid. If it were me, I would try that if you have not already done so in the last 60,000 miles.

Either the actuater is faulty or the gear box.some times the filter inside the gearbox needs to be replaced.Have a proffessional look at it.

Pair iPhone 4s with 2006 BMW x5

Key-in, Ignition On (but don't need to start the engine)Press the R/T button on the steering wheel. "Activate Phone" should display on the radio. On the iPhone search the BT device. Select your car and enter the passkey when prompt on the iphone. Make sure there is no other BT phone near-by or the old one that has paired with the car previously. There is also the maximum number of devices you can have in the BMW BT sharing. If you reach the max, you may have to clear the car BT pairing memory by removing the power to the BT unit (by removing a fuse in the rear fuse box). The info is in the manual and inside the fuse box (which tell you which fuse is for the BT.)

You've a faulty EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation)valve problem. It has to do with emission control and you will not get enough power to achieve speed for trans shift higher when the EGR is bad. Replace the EGR and all will be well.

Ur BMW X5 series is having a transmission problems and it going to be worst if u don't take this car to a AMGO or the BMW dealership to take a look at it transnission gear box.Must have the car transmission fix.If u adnore this problems long enough the car transmission gears in the box will evenly buckle and grain to a ruin all of the gears parts teeths and than the car have to be in reverse and go to drive again every times tries to drive this car.Evenually all the gears teeths in the transmission box are all gone this car will go into iddle and will not go into drive gear at all.

Bmw x5 slow gear change

this is normal to some extent to try and warm up the tranny to opp temperature as soon as possible. make sure the vehicle had the latest software installed in the transmission as this could also cause a delayed shift when cold.
