Question about Sub-Zero Refrigerators

1 Answer

Sub Zero 550 20 years old Refrigerator not cold enough

Noticed our milk was sour for the second time and figured out that the refrigerator is not cooling properly. Door gasket is fine, freezer is working ok. We vacuumed the vent for lent last night.

Is it worth fixing or time to get a new refer, I would not buy a Sub Zero given the price, something like a Bosch or GE side by side.

Hi,

20 years puts a lots of questions. Still I would recomend you try the following:

Time to unplug the refrigerator. We need to check the compressor, start capacitor and start relay. If you do not unplug until we solve the problem the internal overload inside the compressor will be damaged.

OR

The machine should regularly go through an automatic defrost cycle. The timer is often in a white box, bottom LHS, looking from rear. With a stub handle screwdriver you can fast forward the mechanical clock (there is a hole for this in the side of the box which is facing the compressor) to defrost part of cycle. With power on you should be able to hear a constant whirring noise from this clock and its cogs (no noise means clock has probably died). However you will not be able to the noise if the compressor is running at the time. Be very careful as there are mains power leads very close by. I would not recommend you do this unless you are confident you will not kill yourself. You could switch off at plug, turn the clock till you hear a click, switch mains back on and watch to see if the coils defrost from front.

If its still no go then its time to replace it with a new one.

Thank You

My sub zero model 3211 has frozen ice at the back of the refrigerator. It's cold but doesn't seem cold enough and some food has spoiled before its time. What could be the problem?

if it is a solid ball of ice, that is just growing out of the back wall, then you need a new evaporator. That is leaking gas freezing the wall.

Side by side Sub Zero not cold enough.

How old is "OLDER" ? If there is no frost buildup on the back wall of the freezer you could have one of two problems. On older units the compressor wears out with years of service and no longer pumps efficiently. Or it could possibly be low on refrigerant charge. ether one of these two problems is a sign that is time to update to new unit.

If you have frost buildup on the back wall of the freezer section you then would have a problem in the defrost circuit attributed to the timer, defrost heaters or defrost thermostat.
