Question about Toshiba Satellite M40-S417TD Notebook
I've tried holding down the "zero" button, per instructions, but it does not bring up the restore screen as the instructions say it should. I've tried tapping the key repeatedly, releasing it before and after the Toshiba logo screen comes up and it always just goes to through the normal boot up process. Am I doing something wrong or does this mean there is no partition and the laptop can only be wiped and Windows XP reloaded with the original boot up discs?

If it makes a either a griding noise or sounds like it's going to take flight, you may need to have the fan replaced. Even after dust collects in the motherboard compartment, or somehwere by the fans, dirt and oils tend to get stuck in the fan and ruin it. Have the fan replaced before it creates more damage. I have the same model and i just reformatted the hard drive with the original restore disk and it does loop around several times. That is the way it is suppose to do on this particular restore disk. So don't be afraid if it goes around several times because it is doing different tasks each time it loops.

most of the time if you hold down F11 on restart it will give you the recovery manager to reload windows and wipe it out and reload back to factory.

From what I am seeing I don't think your laptop has a recovery partition. Did you ever create the recovery discs for it when it was working?
