Will not heat!

Replaced the Diode and fuse. Did not fix the no heat problem.

Hi!

In most of the cases, this is usually due to a bad magnetron, the other time is sometimes a bad high voltage diode which you have already replaced.

Most of the common things are....loose high voltage wire.....poor solder joint on board.....magnetron.....power relay or a bad door switch. Other possible problems are a faulty relay or solder joint on the power module, but a bad door switch is most common. Please check all these to resolve the issue you are facing with.

When the microwave sounds okay, but there's no heat, one of the internal door switches, the high voltage circuitry, or the circuit board may have a problem. To resolve this problem, you need the assistance of a qualified appliance repair technician.

Most common causes are either the HV diode is shot or the Magnetron needs to be replaced.Also be wise to check the encased fuse.

Diode


The high voltage diode converts the A/C power output of the transformer to D/C, doubling the voltage to nearly 5,000 volts. This high voltage powers the magnetron which emits the energy that cooks the food. If the diode burns out, a lower A/C voltage reaches the magnetron, which is not sufficient to power the magnetron. When the diode fails it is often visibly burned out. If it appears to be good, it can be tested with a volt-Ohm meter capable of testing diodes. High voltage diodes frequently fail and are one of the most common points of failure in a microwave oven. A regular meter with a diode checker will not work to check these diodes. You have to use a meter with a 9 volt battery or put a 9 volt battery in series with the diode to check it.

Door Switch


If the microwave does not heat, one of the door switches might be defective. Microwave ovens normally have three door switches, if any of them fail the microwave does not turn on and does not heat. Check the switches for continuity with an Ohm meter.

Magnetron


If the microwave oven doesn't heat the magnetron tube might have burned out. The magnetron uses high voltage, high current DC power to generate the microwave frequency that cooks the food. If the microwave oven is turned on when it is empty this can cause the magnetron to burn out. Once it is burned out it has to be replaced, it's not repairable.

Samsung SMH9187ST Stainless Steel 1100 Watts Microwave Oven Microwave - it turns on, runs but does not heat up food...I'm thinking this has to be a pretty simple fix....I read about the fuse issue, is...


In this model (as with most models) this is not going to be a blown fuse.

If you or someone you know attempt to check this out, but sure the oven is unplugged.

You would first need to determine if the problem is on the control side or the high voltage side.

We have a sound clip of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are operating here.

If it's quieter than usual, chances are the high voltage section is not getting power. That would mean a problem with a bad door switch or mount or the control circuit board needs repair.

A loud buzz, hum, or groan is usually a shorted high voltage rectifier diode, but a sound like gurgling into an empty coffee mug is one symptom of a failed magnetron, and yet the mag can be bad without that sound.

Will not heat up food everything else is working


could be 1 of 2 problems. could be simple as a bad diode, or could be a bad magnetron. the microwave tends to make a humming sound while heating if its the diode. If the microwave sounds normal but just not heating then the magnetron is bad and needs to be replaced.

probably the magnetron could also be the diode on the capaciter. they have a 7 year warranty on the magnetron.

Lost heat on microwave ,everything else works fine simple fix?


Inexpensive fix yes, but quite dangerous as you have to either replace the High voltage Diode or the magnetron depending on what has gone. Most often it is the Diode as that is fed a few thousand volts and anomolies such as a surge in current cause it to blow(popping sound) You can also check the fuses and if lucky it is just a fuse, but a fuse very seldomly just blows as it points to an underlying fault such as magnetron , capacitor or Diode. Have a service man attend to it unless you know what you are doing as you are dealing with lethal voltages and current even after the microwave has been switched off.

Everything works except heat


Sounds like you've had a failure in the microwave portion of the unit.

Microwave not heating problems when the timer/controller board appears to function properly, are related to the following components -

1) Diode
2) Capacitor
3) Transformer
4) Magnetron
