Fireing out carb

I have an 18hp intek plus briggs in my craftsman rider.2001. My wife was useing it yesterday and said it stalled and wouldnt run. I check on it today. It would fire and run ruogh but every other fire came out the carb. I cleaned and check plug, magnito, and checked to see if the key in flywheel was broke. all were fine. What would cause this?

It could be an intake valve that is not sealing due to sticking or burning and in some cases mal-adjusted. When was the last time the valve lash was adjusted?

It sounds as though it is out of time which is a little un-characteristic for a non direct drive mower.

I recommend taking it to a servicing dealer that is familiar with the B&S engines and have the engine checked and serviced including adjusting the valve lash which it is over due for.

I have a 18hp b&s inteck that want idle the govenor goes back and forth

I believe the condition your describing is called "hunting" this sometimes happens when engine has a problem with it's air/fuel mix usually due to a carb problem
id start by cleaning out the fuel tank and filters and then moving on to the carb

What is the compression lbs for a 18 hp brigg/stratton intek engine

Not sure where to get compression pounds for this, but let me refer you to the Briggs website for detailed product specs and power curves.
Intek can be twin or single sylinder.

For Twin....
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/us/en/engines/rider-mower-engines/intek-series-v-twin

For single....the are in 1/2 HP ratings but the link is below....
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/us/en/engines/rider-mower-engines/intek-with-xrd-single-cylinder

If further detail is required, I will need the model type and trim found on the valve cover.

My B&S 18hp Intec engine on my lawn tractor will not start but it will backfire??? Will not run

You may get lucky and have a sheared keyway on the flywheel . Just a lil off can make a big difference on timing.

My intek 18hp will only run with choke fully closed.please advise possible problem &solution .the throttle seems to have little impact on the running of the engine

Hi and welcome to FixYa. It sounds like the metering jet in the bottom of the carb throat is clogged.

1st turn off the fuel supply

You will have to remove the float bowl from the carb and then the BRASS jet / orifice. Once removed hold it up to the light.. you should see a pinhole of light thru the jet. No pin-hile = run only with choke. ALSO the nut / bolt that holds on the float bowl has 2 holes in it make sure those are clear.

Before you reinstall the float bowl turn on the fuel and catch it in a spray paint can lid or something similar. It should flow rapidly and stop as you GENTLY raise the float. If no flow then you have a stuck needle and seat or a clogged fuel supply line. Correct same and reinstall the filter bowl. It should run fine after that.

Thanks for using FixYa!

B&S Intek OHV 18hp muffler glows red hot

sounds like its running too rich on fuel. try turning the fuel mixture screw in 1/4 turn at a time til it starts to stall then turn out 1/4 turn or 2 and see if that helps.Maybe when you used the air it turned this screw???

21hp intek v-twin runs only with choke on full

You are not getting enough fuel.... by choking it you are enriching the mixture with less air , more fuel. Some where in the fuel system or carbureator something is still plugged.Or the mixture screw is too far in.

My briggs & stratton will not start

If the engine fires on starting fluid, then you are missing fuel, so you need to start with the source, is fuel getting to the carb? if not why not. Check fuel lines, shut off valves and filters.
If it is, is the carb float allowing the bowl to fill?
If there is fuel in th float bowl, then you need to look at mixture and idle settings.

hope this is of some help.
