Question about Kenmore Washing Machines

1 Answer

"suds" code, won't pump out, barrel won't spin properly, "clinking" sound behind lower panel.

I usually use "All" HE laundry detergent, but I think the bottle I am currently using has the wrong product in it because I keep getting a "suds" code, the pump won't take the water out, the barrel will not spin quickly, and the pump area is making a clicking sound.

You will have to access the pump and clean it out.
Need a model number to help you do that.

Hi. you will need to stop using the unauthorized brand of soap. a non HE soap will be trip the suds sensor and it will shutdown the unit. the best way to restore normal actions is to let the washer sit over night. remove the clothes, if any, and allow the suds to settle. the next morning, simply start the draining process. this will drain the water.

5d fault what does it mean?

The 5d (or Sd) error code indicate that the control detected a suds lock or overdose of detergent during the drain or spin phases of the cycle. This is usually caused by overuse of detergent. It can also be caused by using regular detergent instead of HE (High Efficiency) detergent. After the excessive suds dissipate, you can normally clear the fault code and then run a drain/spin to finish the load of laundry.

If you detect no excessive suds, this fault code could be caused by a clogged drain system or a failed water level pressure switch.

Won't finish cycle 21 F- flashing on panel

F21 error code is indicating that it is taking too long to drain water.

Your details indicate that you are using too much detergent or the wrong type of detergent and causing excessive suds. The drain pump can not pump suds out. The washer requires HE (High Efficiency) detergent formulated for front loading washers.

Cut back on the detergent and it will most likely operate correctly.

NOTES:
* After four (4) minutes the "Sd" error will be displayed, and then four (4) minutes later the "F21" error code will be displayed.
* Press STOP two (2) times to clear the display.

Possible Causes:
- Using too much High Efficiency (HE) detergent and causing too much suds.
- Using NON-HE detergent causing too much suds.
- Kink in drain hose
- Debris or foreign objects in drain pump filter.

The drain filter is located behind the lower access panel.

NOTE: Disconnect the power cord before removing the lower access panel and cleaning out the drain pump filter.

Remove the two screws (key#21) securing access panel. The filter cap (key#14) is removed by turning it counter clockwise. NOTE: Be sure that all the water has pump out before removing the cap. Have some large towels handy because there will be water coming out the filter/pump once you remove the cap. Check and clean the filter and remember to reduce the amount of detergent and the washer should perform as designed

Display reads "SUD" or "F" sometimes and machine will not spin or wash.

"SUD" is a Suds Detect error code. The washer will not complete any cycle as long as the error code is present. The following link explains the error and some potential causes:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3608687-sud_error

The number one cause of the error comes from using too much, or the wrong type, of detergent. You are required to use High Efficiency (HE) detergent with these washers because the concentration is formulated for HE washers that use small amounts of water. Using the wrong type of detergent can also void any manufacturer warranty you may have.

NOTE: HE detergent does not have a lot of suds, which often confuses consumers into thinking they aren't using enough detergent. With HE washers little to no suds is NORMAL and preferred.

If you use too much detergent, using the RINSE/SPIN option is recommended to flush the tub, drain pump and lines. IMPORTANT: It can sometimes take SEVERAL cycles to clear. Also, leaving the door open for a while can allow air into a suds filled drum to get rid of some of the bubbles.

Secondary causes can come from something restricting the drainage system. Most notably, something lodged in the drain pump and/or drain hose(s). I've included a follow-on link that explains how to check the drain pump reservior if required.

Each one of these washers come with a technical data sheet inside.

To access, you will need to remove the lower toe panel under the door. The access screws are located under the bottom front edge of the panel. You may have to prop the two front feet of the washer up for better access ( a 2x4 works well for this). With the screws removed, the panel should drop down, then come off. If the tech sheet isn't directly behind the panel, it will be affixed to one of the interior cabinet walls.

The tech sheet lists all error code definitions, troubleshooting data, diagnostics procedures and wiring diagrams. I mention the tech sheet because you may need it from time to time to troubleshoot your washer.

Read through the information provided and let me know if you have any further questions. I hope this can help you.

Sud message on display and stopped working

SUDS error is usually an Overdose of Detergent detected during the Wash Cycle.
The motor control unit senses a suds lock condition by analyzing the current draw on the drive motor. If "Sud" is displayed a potential suds lock is detected. This may signify a bad pump, an extra heavy load, excessive detergent, or excessive suds.

If too much detergent was used, run the unit through a Rinse/Spin cycle, then a Normal cycle, without adding any detergent. This should clear the unit of the excess detergent.

Check the drain hose and make sure it is not plugged or kinked.

If none of this fixes it then further testing would require opening of cabinet and follow trouble shooting steps on the tech sheet located inside bottom lower panel. To remove bottom lower panel there are 3-4 screws at bottom of panel remove them and pull out and down on panel to remove.
If you are not comfortable with this I would recommend calling for service.

The machine has stopped and is giving the error code "sud". I may have added the laundry detergent twice although it is HE detergent. Any suggestions? Thank you. It is a Whirlpool Duet.

The problem is from to much soap. HE detergent is a lower sudsing detergent, but to much will cause this error code. You need to let the washer fill and wash for a minute, then cancel it and put it in drain/spin. Repeat this 4-5 times. This will get all the soap and residue out and back to normal.
