Question about Canon PIXMA MP780 All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

Canon MP780 Printer/Scanner/Fax Hi, Whilst it is printing ?colour?, it is no longer printing ?Black? when photocopying or when the nozzle check is carried out. However, it prints Black okay when printing off a ?Word? document. Black is also transferred okay to the screen under scanning. Thanks, Mike

I've done tonnes of cleaning and refreshing and it makes no difference. I don't understand Greyscale but I found it under Preferences and the last copy I printed off was, I believe, in greyscale; this was a nozzle check print; but it still didn't print Black 3eBK. It does print Black 6BK on the nozzle check. But remember, black prints ok from a Word Document. I also have a drawing system (Vectorworks) and black prints fine from this too. But no black at all when photocopying and no sign 3eBK on a nozzzle check.

  • micky77 May 21, 2009

I've realised that the last nozzle check was not performed under Greyscale. Idon't know how to change the profile to greyscale.

  • micky77 May 21, 2009

I only noticed the problem yesterday. It was working okay a week or two ago. It's about 2 years old and lightly used.

  • micky77 May 21, 2009

Photocopying: If I press the colour button I get a coloured copy and the black prints grey. If I press the black copy button. I get nothing.

  • micky77 May 21, 2009

Yes, printing from the copier and not the computer.

I do the nozzle check from the computer and get no black 3ebk.

And yes, black prints fine from computer when using Word and Vectorworks.

  • micky77 May 21, 2009

I will try a new cartridge and get back to you. Yes, it's a cheap knock-off.

  • micky77 May 21, 2009

The new cartridge makes no difference.

I changed the setting to Greyscale and it makes no difference.

I've only ever used cheap cartridges. The Canon one's cost an arm and a leg; they should reduce the price.

    What should I do?

  • micky77 May 21, 2009

I could only find factory default settings on the computer under Maintenance so reset to factory default. I can't find anything on the machine itself. My saved fax numbers are still on there so it can't be completely restored.

The print head alignment test prints the coloured bars but not the black numbers! :-(

  • micky77 May 23, 2009

I bought a new printhead but it's still the same so it's probably something more sinister. I may be better off getting a new machine but I'll first look into repair costs. I've already spent too much on this.

Thank you for all your help and I'm now going to press the 'Accecpt Solution' button.

    Very much appreciated help.

    Thank you.

I'm not sure what do you its no longer printing black?

But lets start by some troubleshooting steps:

First perform the head cleaning:

  1. Press the <Menu> button on the printers operation panel repeatedly until [MAINTENANCE] appears in the LCD.
  2. Press the left [<] or right [>] arrow buttons to select the cleaning setting you want. Select [HEAD CLEANING] or [HEAD REFRESHING] for deep print head cleaning.
  3. Note: [HEAD REFRESHING] uses more ink than [HEAD CLEANING], so perform [HEAD REFRESHING] only when necessary.
  4. Press the <OK> button.
  5. Print a Nozzle Check Pattern and perform at least two Head Refreshings if the pattern is not correct.

Try to print a document in Grayscale Printing mode.
  1. open a document you wish to print
  2. press file
  3. press print
  4. select your printer and click on printer preferences or printing preferences
  5. check that tha paper type is correct or plain paper.
  6. check the grayscale printing box

Canon information: Why color ink may be used when printing in black and white
Even when printing in black and white, color ink is used for the following reasons:

1. Automatic cleaning of the print head.

To prevent the print head nozzles from clogging, the print head is automatically cleaned periodically. At that time, a small amount of each color ink is consumed.

Therefore, although printing in black and white is performed, color ink is also consumed.

2. Color inks may be used to create black.

When printing in grayscale or on photo paper or when duplex printing, although printing appears in black and white, the color black may be created using the three (cyan, magenta, and yellow) color inks. Printers without a pigment black tank / cartridge will print black / grayscale will create a composite black using color ink even on plain paper.

Therefore, although printing in black and white is performed, color ink may be consumed.

3. In order to keep the heavy black ink from smearing on the page or in the printer, color ink is used when duplex printing to help create black text.

the grayscale is a setting on the computer.

when did the problem start or has it always been like this?

  • Ekse May 21, 2009

Two years.. the print head might need to be replaced, but since its lighly used can't say for sure.

So you are getting black when you print from word, and few other programs....

Photocopying are you doing this on the printer itself without the use of the computer?

  • Ekse May 21, 2009

Is the black cartridge empty? have you removed the tape from it?

The printer can make black color from the color cartridges but if you dont' get black on the nozzle check, then the cartridge is not being used at all, or its not working properly or it still has a tape on it.

  • Ekse May 21, 2009

I see so the black ink cartridge is not working: its either empty - could it be dry? when did you replace it? or theres a problem with the printhead its not getting a signal from the printer or the carrier is malfunctioning.

Try reseating the cartridge, is it a canon cartridge or a cheap knock off?

  • Ekse May 21, 2009

    sounds good

  • Ekse May 21, 2009

    Lets see....

    Print head cleaning... Done
    Replaced ink tanks.. Done
Tape is removed from cartidge.. yes?
Reseated cartridges so they are snapped in properly?.. done?

Reset /initialize it or restore it to factory default settings, look around the menus for a factory reset or any other reset feature.

    Print head alingment?

    1. Press the button on the printers operation panel repeatedly until [3.MAINTENANCE] appears in the LCD.

    2. Press the left [<] or right [>] arrow buttons to select [ALIGN PRINT HEAD].

    3. Press the button. A horizontal pattern is printed.

    4. In column A on the printout, note which box has the most solid image with the least vertical striping. Note the number next to this box and use [<] or [>] to enter it.

    5. Press the button.

    6. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for columns B through L.

    7. When all values have been entered, press the left arrow button [<] to print the vertical pattern.

    8. For column M on the printout, note which box has the most solid image. Note the number next to this box and use [<] or [>] to enter it.

    9. Press the button.

    10. Repeat steps 9 and 10 for column N.

Print head may need to be replaced.
You may purchase a print head* through an Authorized Service Facility
    Find one -

    * Please be aware that a print head may not correct the issue and the part is
    not returnable.

If the problem is still not solved you may want to take it to a repairer or ask another expert, I think thats about all that we can do about it, its not a computer driver problem either since it happens when you do a photocopy directly on the printer, so its a internal printer problem.

I have a brother DCP-165C and it is not printing black.

The nozzle may be blocked. So take out the colour cartridge and place its nozzle in a bit of water for about 10 mins. Bring it out and dab the nozzle with folded paper. If the tissue is blotted with the three colour it means you have unblocked the nozzle. Try now to print after returning the colour cartridge. You may need to repeat to get good results.

Thank you!!

Why does it keep running out of color ink, while printing only Black and White?

Whilst you rarely print in colour, its important to know that you should try to print in colour at least once a week. This will reduce the risk of your colour nozzles blocking up.

Many people have gone out to replace their 'hardly used' colour cartridges when they dont work, thinking that they have dried up, when infact its simply blocked nozzles.

If you want to keep your colour nozzles and ink ready to run, just do a full colour alignment every 1-2 weeks. Minimal ink usage there and you keep your Canon MP780 running well!

Some colours not printing

I bet you are using non genuine ink, the MP780 will not put up with that ink, you will need a new printhead and maybe a purge unit. Take the machine to your ink supplier and get him to fix it as he supplied the ink
