Can the computer connect to the router, but not to the internet? If so you have a router configuration problem. If you can't connect to the router then you have a cable or a NIC problem, or the computer is mis-configured.

Try assigning your laptop a static IP. To do this in Windows:

  • Open Windows Start menu.
  • Open Control Panel.
  • Classic view: Open Network Connections
Category view: Select Network and Internet Connections, and thenNetwork Connections.
  • Double-click on your active LAN or Internet connection.
  • Click Properties
  • In the General tab, highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item, and clickProperties.
  • In the General tab, click Use the following IP address, and enter: - IP address. The static IP address you want to assign to this computer (try 192.168.1.110 to start). - Subnet mask. Subnet mask used by your router (try 255.255.255.0 to start). - Default gateway. IP address of your router's default gateway (try 192.168.1.1 to start).
  • In Use the following DNS server addresses, enter all the IP addressses for the DNS servers your router uses (or you can try your router's address, probably 192.168.1.1).
  • Click OK.

then if this dont wont restart the computer.
if its still not working you will need a local tech to see if the ip address is hardcoded into the NIC

Whew! Awesome troubleshooting work there.

When it's configured for DHCP, go to the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties and hit Advanced to bring up the "Advanced TCP/IP Properties" dialog.
Under the IP Settings tab, the top panel should be "IP addresses" and should have "DHCP Enabled" as the only entry, and the default gateway should be blank.

If both of those are correct, then I have one other question for you:

When you manually set an IP, are you able to use the network? If so, are you able to ping the DHCP server's address?

If so, then my guess would be that the DHCP server has a stale record for your Dell's MAC address.

Post back with the "Add Comment" button here and we'll get it working for you.

Sounds like an IP address problem. Your IP address on both the NIC card (DFE 530) and the router have to be in the same address range. You can do this 2 ways. 1... Have your router hand out addresses automatically. Make sure DHCP is enabled and that you have at least one address available for it to give out. ie. 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.3. The first three number must be the same as the router. The other option is to manually set your IP address on your nic card to match the router. If the router is lets say 192.168.0.1 then you can assign 192.23.34.2 to your computer NIC. If you haven't been able to access your router then check your router manual to find out the default IP address and use the same number for your NIC changing only the last number. The largest number you can use is 255. Hope this helps.

1 of 2 Dell Dimension can't get on line although shows connectivity

NO Internet
· power cycle the modem and router (turn-off the modem and router, and wait for 10-15 seconds before powering on the modem first, then wait for 3-4 solid lights before you turn-on the router; check a website, or else
· bypass router (by directly connecting your computer to the modem)
· checked a website
· checked the IP address by clicking start button for winXP, click run and type cmd, on the c:> prompt type ipconfig then hit enter, get the IP: if the IP address starts with 169.254.x.x…the type ipconfig /renew…or else type first ipconfig /release, then type ipconfig /renew.
· If media is disconnected, check the modem cable that runs at the back of the computer, unplugged and plug it back, or try other cat 5/ modem cable.
· Check the device manager for network adapter (is properly working), by right click on my computer, click on properties, and click on hardware tab, and click hardware manager button, click the plus sign next network adapters, makes sure there is no markings such ? ! or X marks, or else install the device manager for the Ethernet card.
· Type Ping google.com, check if the it receives and sends packet, if it does, then check the browser…
· Check browser settings, delete cookies, temp files on general tab…(click on tools->internet options), click on the connections tab, the make sure it is “never dial a connection”, check the LAN settings, make sure that there is no marks or checks on the boxes..click ok. Click on the advanced tab, click on the button “restore defaults”. Hit apply and ok. Close the browser, and open it up again and check for online website.
· Once connected, install back the router, if the there is no website shown, please your router brand support line for the reconfiguration of the router.

Dell Dimension 5150 will not connect to the internet. HELP

Check if your system is able to get an IP address.

Bypass your router to check if its a router connection problem. Connect your computer directly to your modem.

Click on Start>RUN>Type cmd then press enter. On the black box, type ipconfig /all. Check if your system has an IP address. If it says 169.254.x.x or no IP address then there's a oroblem with your connection. Power cycle your modem, router and computer then check your IP address again.

Power cycle your devices: modem - router then computer.

contact Comcast and have them reset your IP address. also have them ping your modem after they reset IP.
Also, see Linksys website for LELA (easylink advisor) to add devices to network. Uses a good bit of memory so don't allow to run automatically at start up.

its sure an IP conflict is there and i hope you don't have a router - a modem is there so that when you connect to the internet, computers will get ip address from your service provider and not from your device which is not having that function because of no router. Kindly check in your network properties that you have specified any manual IP address delete it and keep the option obtain Ip address automatically. Before all this you have to go to the my computer right click and select properties then hardware ->devicemanager ->networkadapters - under that you uninstall all the adapters and restart your pc

Thanks
