Question about Dishwashers

Kenmore dishwasher model # 665.15522000 leaking badly

My kenmore dishwasher model # 665.15522000 began leaking badly after 6 yrs. after troubleshooting, checking if it's still level, float, etc. i removed the front door panel to see water violently running over the top tub at the right hand corner (when facing) as the lower arm spun even on light wash. deflectors and door gasket seem fine. lower sprayarm has no visible cracks. pump seems fine (water is making it up to upper spray arm). after tricking the machine, i observed that the water intake and exit is fine. water level and float seem fine. it's almost like the machine gained power, thus creating a tidal wave and pushing the water over the top tub...badly! any advice would greatly appreciated. thanks, chris.

    vic,

the door is tight. the lower and upper arms are swinging perfectly. the water level is fine. about a month ago the water was just trickling over the top tub...now it's flying over. like the lower arm is spinning too fast. almost 7 yrs. ago when i had this dishwasher installed by sears, i made the comment with excitement saying, " i'll be getting ten or fifteen years out of this one." only to be responded to by a chuckle, with him saying, "they begin breaking around seven." now i see in sears that some dishwashers are sold with plastic deflectors at the top tub line and at the bottom door gasket. that's not going to help if the motor is going to start spinning the lower arm faster and faster. like i said mine started out with a trickle. now it's a deluge. i'll check everything again but it seems that they build these machines to break after a while, if you know what i mean. three weeks ago, i even went as far as building my own splashguard with thin plastic and plumbers putty but that was when it was just a trickle. i am one who has always bought new equipment, have taken care of it so that it would last, knowing about the way companies build things and their departure from high standards. since it's all about money and sales! since i'm poor i'll continue to exhaust all my options, even mayne to go as far as replacing the arm even though i can't see anything wrong with it before i consider buying a new machine but i know it's probably not going to help since its the motor that is causing that lower arm to spin too fast...i thank you for your help and would welcome any other advice...boy o boy i wish everything could be made like my cast iron pan i bought for ten dollars. you buy one and it lasts for ten thousand years.

    thanks, chris

    vic,

i first have to give God glory for giving me the patience to endure. the problem is solved! i was at my wits ends trying to trouble shoot this problem and the solution was right there. there are 8 screws holding the outlet pump and rubber gasket in place and they were all lose. this forced not enough water to make it up the tower but enough to make the upper arm spin and make me think there was nothing wrong. i was just about to order a new lower arm and black rubber bellow when i noticed them. all this made it seem like those other things were happening like we discussed. praise God! maybe your frigidare friend that you mentioned has the same problem. anyway, thanks.

Hi, Make sure the jets in the spray arm ore not plugged at all. Check the black bellows on top the lower spray arm and see if it has a split in it. Let me know if these help or if I can assist you further.

Well the only other thing I can think of is the water level should be no higher then the heating element. You are right, sounds like something is creating waves and the first thing to look at is the spray arm. Can you tell that the lower sarm is actually turning?
These are things I look for first when I get on a job sight. Sounds like you have checked everything!! I see no more seals or deflectors other then door seal. Does the door latch adjust at all so that the door might close tighter?
    Just some ideas.

It is frustrating when something is going wrong but can't be pin pointed. They need a window in the door of the D/W so we can see what is actually going on. I just had a Frigidaire D/W today I am trying to figure out same symptoms.
I hate that I can't give a definite answer. I hope the new spray arm is the answer.

    Good Luck

I am glad you found out what was wrong. I have never seen this issue but, I can sure understand how it would give the wave effect.

Take Care and thank you for letting me know.

Works fine, cleans properly, last couple of times has big puddle of water over floor, seems to be coming from underneath machine. checked filters, hoses etc and all ok. machine is approx. 8 yrs old..

one some models such as kenmore or hotpoint, the door seals go bad (the black rubber things in the corner at the base of the door)
On others such as tappan and frigidaire
the little corner diverters come away from the base (they are semi clear plastic and
attach to the bottom of the dishwasher in each corner near the door).

Also if you have done a lot of dishes by hand the soap may accumulate in the sump of the dishwasher and cause it to oversuds causing soapy water to leak out the front.
If you use regular dish detergent instead of dishwasher detergent, this will occur as well.

Last thing to look at, especially on hotpoint, ge or kenmore is the shaft that enters the
side of the pump which is attached to a triangle shaped piece of plastic. The seal often
fails there and will require pump replacement as it is molded into the case of the unit.

Dishwasher not starting

There is a thermal fuse located in the control panel that is probably blown out.
Open the control panel by removing the 6 screws around the top inside of the door. The thermal fuse is located on the top right side. Remove the wires from the fuse. Use a volt neter set for continuity to test the fuse. No reading is a bad fuse.
This link will show the fuse.
