SOURCE: wiring diagram for electricmotor with capacitor

I do not have a diagram for you, but depending on the motor, I can tell you a couple of things. 1. All capacitors are wired in series with the start winding. Most multi-speed motors, that require capacitors, have two brown leads, along with the motor winding leads. If this is the scenario, then just connect line power to neutral and the speed you wish to use, and connect the two brown leads, one to each side of the capacitor. Hope this helps.

I have an old Intertherm gas-fired furnace, Model MGH-055AB which ceased operating last night. It was quite warm when I arrived home, and when I set the heat up a little, began to hum, but the fan would...

Tom P's answer is generally correct: The motor start capacitor is usually not the problem. However, in some cases, particularly on older furnaces, where there were capacitors of certain make and production run will prematurely fail. This happened in March on a mobile home HVAC unit where both the blower fan and condenser fan motor capacitors failed open circuit. Both caps were of the same Mfg, and production lot.
Here is a suggestion (for you or an electrically inclined friend): Locate a substitute motor capacitor having similar Mfd (or MF) and Voltage ratings. Remove power from the unit. Reach into the blower squirrel cage and spin it to verify that the shaft is not frozen. Pull the wires from the existing capacitor noting color and location. Connect the wires to the substitute capacitor and secure it place. Apply power and turn on the blower. A no start? Motor replacement time.

You need to find out if the problem is in the T-stat, T-stat wire or in the furnace you can do this in a few easy steps

Step 1- Unwire the low voltage from the furnace. Then turn the power back on and see if the blower comes on if it does then the problem is in the furnace and you will need to troubleshoot the furnace (see bottom of page for troubleshooting furnace) if it does not then proceed to step 2

Step 2- Wire the low voltage back up to the furnace (follow the wiring diagram below). And unwire the T-stat, make sure that no wires are touching each other, then turn the power back on to the furnace, if the blower starts then you have a short in the T-stat wire and you will need to pull a new wire. If it does not then proceed to step 3

Step 3- Turn the power back off at the furnace and wire the T-stat back up (follow the wiring diagram below). Turn the T-stat to auto heat 90 if the heat does not start but the blower just runs then you need to replace the T-stat.

How do i replace the start capacitor on my furnace in the attic?

There actually is no start capacitor in the furnace, but there is usually a run capacitor. The run capacitor is mounted on the blower housing. Turn the power off to the furnace and remove the blower door. Look back at the actual blower motor and follow at least one brown wire to a metalic oval. That metalic oval is the capacitor. Remove the wires and make a note of how it is wired and install a new capacitor of the same microfarad value. The microfarad value is marked something like 5mfd or 5uF (it may be 3, 5, 7.5, 10, or 15 microfarads. Make sure to use the right one or you can cause failure to the motor.
