When forgot Windows password, you should firstly check your password hints. If there is another account with administrative privilege, log in through the account and then change your password. When there is a prepered password reset disk, it can also be an pretty easy thing to reset your password. Meanwhile, Windows password reset software such as Windows Password Killer can also be a good way, for it will save you much time and avoid data loss.

Forgot windows password, you can reinstall Windows or reset the old password with windows password reset tool. I do not recommend you to reinstall Windows, which can lead a data loss. You can downloaded Windows Password Reset 9.0 and burned it to a CD/DVD or USB memory card. Then to remove the password.

Oh, you must be an Administrator, right? If there is another Administrator account on the PC, it can restore your password through User Account Settings -> Manage Another Account.
If not, I have a complex way. First, restart the PC. When it shows the HP logo when booting up, press the button for Setup (it is shown at the bottom of the screen, and it is F8 on my HP tx2001au).
Now, don't get scared by what appears. It looks a bit complex, but it is very simple and easy.
Navigate using the keyboard. Press the right button to move to the Security section. Here, press Enter on the Administrator Password option. Now enter and confirm a new password and you're done.
See the bottom of the screen for the button for 'Quit Saving Changes' and the computer will reboot. Now, I guess you can enter the new password.
If this doesn't work, see online for ways to reset a password in Vista. There are some softwares to burn to a CD and use.
If it is an XP, I guess there is nothing to do. Just press Ctrl+Alt+Del on the logon screen to see the classic logon screen. Type in the username 'Administrator' without quotation marks and the password blank. Press Enter and enjoy.

Start up your notebook and log in at the admnistrator account (the default pass is "blank"). In case you don't see the account press ctrl+alt+del twice and type user: administrator and leave blank the password. After loading the windows (may take time if this account has never been again activated) go to start>settings>control panel>administrator tools>users and change your account's password as you wish.
In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post.
Thanks and regards
