Atari 2600 controller problem

Whenever a game that uses the joystick is being played it always just goes all the way to the left and won't go to the right. I've tried multiple games and joysticks but it still does the same thing. I've even tried without any controller in the slot and it still goes to the left.

for some strange reason paddle games work o it though....

i already tried the "blowing for good luck" method. i even opened up the system and got every last bit of dust out of it and it still had the same problem.

anyone have a clue on what could be the problem?

I HAVE BEEN REBUILDING ATARI SYSTEMS FOR 20 YEARS AND THOUGHT I HAD SEEN EVERYTHING, AND I WOULD THINK IT TO BE A JOYSTICK PROBLEM. THEY CAN BE REBUILT WITH NEW CONTACTS, BUT I AM THINKING THE PROBLEM MUST BE INTERNAL. I CAN ONLY SUGGEST TRYING ANOTHER DECK. THERE MUST BE SOME PROBLEM WITH THE PINS IN THE PLUG PORT.

IT SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GAME. THE FACT THAT PADDLES WORK SHOULD MEAN ALL THE PINS ARE STRAIGHT. PADDLES MUST USE DIFFERENT PINS.

Does the Atari 5200 have the same controller as the Atari 2600?

It does use a slightly different controller. The joystick that comes with the Atari 5200 has 360 degrees of control while the Atari 2600 controler only give you 8 ways of motion. Teh 5200 also has a number pad and buttons for start, pause and reset.

I have an Atari 2600 console. The Player #1 slot is stuck in the firing position. It is not the joystick. I swapped out joysticks and no change. It is something with the console. What can I do to fix this?

Well the controller ports inside of the console might be needed to be resoldered or the controller ports might be broken or it could be just bad controllers then.

The joysticks for my atari 2600 will go in every direction but up. is there a way to fix this?

Wow. I miss my old Atari. Those old Atari joysticks were not too complicated. What it sounds like is the little metal disc for your up has worn out. You just need to take it apart and replace that disk. Its basically just a flexible square so when you press down it completes the circuit. You can probably get one from another joystick (even some of the newer ones).

ON my atari 2600 my paddlel controlers don't work in the left port. but my regular joystick dose. what do i do?

Unless you are an electronics expert with a soldering iron, I would just get a replacement paddle from eBay or online seller. I occasionally experienced this problem in the early- to mid-1980s - getting new paddles always did the trick. If you are up for a challenge, look at the joystick pin and then look at the paddle pin - you will see at least a one-pin difference between the two. Check the paddle pin to see if one is physically damaged, then compare the pin on the console itself. Have fun!

Which Joystick?

YES!
The joystick controllers are backwards compatible with the original 2600 system so you also technically get 2 new 2600 joysticks with this set.
