Question about Canon Pixma MP500 All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

I am trying to use my MP500 with a computer that is running Windows 98. This particular computer is not connected to the internet. ( I just use it for a drawing program) When running the software, I get the message: install explorer 5.5 or 6.0. Is there any way to bypass this ? or does it need an internet connection ? What are the hardware/software requirements to run the MP500 ?

Please upgrade the Internet Browser to 5.0 or later as thats the minimum requirement for the software to operate. Windows 98 is fine.

System requirements Windows ? XP, 2000 Professional, Millennium Edition, 98 * Internet Explorer 5.0 or later: Pentium /Celeron 300 MHz ** 128 MB (256 MB recommended) / 650 MB Hard disk space / CD-ROM drive
Mac OS X v.10.2.4 or later: Power PC G3, G4, G5 / 128 MB / 550 MB Hard disk space / CD-ROM drive

Thank You

well you can download IE 5 or latter from on and burn it on a cd or put it on a pen drive. Next take it to the system where you have the software installed and install it from the media manually.

Need the driver for a SMARTDISK model FDUSB-B2 external floppy disk drive unit for a old Gateway Windows 98 computer

Since it is a USB device, does Windows 98 automatically load the device-driver when it is connected? If not, connect to the Internet, and run Windows Update ( and let it scan for updates. When it completes, look at the "optional" updates -- there may be a device-driver that can be downloaded.

We need to isolate and troubleshoot from wall out. First, you need to check that your internet line is working by connecting your computer directly to your internet line (take off the router from the scene). If that doesn't work, you need to call your ISP to get you up and running first with your PC. As soon as it's up that's the only time you can add the router to the network.

Once confirmed, follow steps from this site:

Can not get on facebook. my computer is awindows 98 and the library has 2 windowa 98 and you can get on facebook on them computers at the library. so how do i get on facebook?

It may not be Windows 98 that is the problem it may just be your browser. The library is running a browser with no add-ons. Have you tried running Internet Explorer with add-ons disabled? Have you tried another browser such as Opera. You will have to try an older version of Opera such as 9.64 which you can get here. You should be able to get on Facebook with Opera. With Windows 98 which is a dinosaur you are going to have more and more problems besides the fact that it is a very vulnerable system. You really need to get a new computer running Windows 7 or get a Mac running Snow Leopard.

Need drivers to run windows 98se on dell xps m140

Microsoft (and Dell) stopped supporting Windows 98 a few years ago -- it lasted for over TEN years! So, it is *NOT* likely that you will find drivers for any computer that was "designed for Windows 2000" or "designed for Windows XP" or "designed for Vista".

So, in general, it is a _bad_ idea to connect any computer running Windows 98 to the Internet -- Microsoft has issued many "security-fixes" in the 4 years after they stopped supporting Windows 98 and Windows ME.

How do you optimize windows 98 for a dsl connection?

you either buy a new computer or install windows 2000 to the computer.

windows 98 is very limited in that sense. and its quite insecure to use that online.

I would say its not safe to use windows 98 on the internet, I would definitely NOT pay my bills on a windows 98 machine.

Since microsoft does not support 98 anymore, they don't fix any of the security problems that come up, so your computer is open to the internet for any hacker to drop by and take it over or steal your details.

I would highly recommend it that you either install windows 2000 to the computer or buy a new computer, or buy a used computer with windows xp, I bet you can get one of those for less than 100

Wireless Router

Hi Sleepey,

I'm sorry to inform you that computers running Windows 98 or earlier cannot share a wireless network created on a computer running XP or Vista - I've tried it. The only way to get internet access on your Win 98 PC is to wire it to the router with an ethernet cable.

Also, make sure that, in Control Panel, your network connection (probably called "1394 Connection") is set to automatically acquire an IP address - here's how:
1) Right-click 1394 Connection and select Properties.
2) On the General Tab, under "This connection uses the following items," select Internet Protocol and click Properties.
3) Verify that the radio button next to Obtain an IP address automatically is checked.

I hope this helps - please let me know if I can be of any futher assistance.

Kind regards,
