2002 Kia Rio Timing Belt

I have a 02 Kia Rio, I changed the timing belt at 66 thousand and change. Im up to 126,370 approx. I know the manual states to change the timing belt every 60,000 miles but is that the case? I ask because Im going about 70 miles one way then 70 miles back.

I told the repair shop a few weeks ago to check the belts and they told me they are not good but I can change them within a few months. They suggested I change all the belts

Which belts do I need to get? I see from auto stores they have the serpentine belt, but then online stores have the v-belt, multi-rib belt, etc

Yes, this is VERY IMPORTANT, this is an interference engine, meaning the valves and the piston cannot be in the same place at the same time,or it will bend the valves.then you are looking at a major repair job, think or it as insurance on your engine. please rate my fix as i strive to be the best, questions, get back to me

yes change all the belts they all have to come off when you change the timing belt,so no extra labor just the price of the other belts

  • Ray Keckeisen May 21, 2009

go to gates.com enter car info and you can get the stock numbers on the belts,it appears that you do not have a serpentine belt, you have to know if you have power steering and a/c as it makes a difference in the belts, please rate my fix

What is cost ofpart and labor timing belt 2002 kia rio

Well, if you had had it changed before it broke it probably would have been around 200-300 bucks for parts and labor, but if it has indeed broke and has bent the valves then you are looking at well over 1000 dollars. I recently did a Chevy Aveo that was close to 2000 due to the cost of parts.

Kia rio not starting

Timing belt should have been changed at 60,000 miles. A loose timing belt or teeth missing from synchronous belt will lose timing. Damage to valves can occur if timing is not correct.

Just curious, timing belt or chain. If belt when to change. Kia sedona 02 V-6. Thank you

Has a timing belt, Kia recommends replacement every 60,000 miles, also this engine in an interference engine, which valve to piston damage most likely will occur in the event of timing belt failure.

I need to know how to replace a timing belt for a 2005 kia rio. i lost the manual and i need to know how to time it correctly

The timing is electronic and non adjustable. If you change the belt and don't have it set up (positioned) exactly right , you will cause major engine damage.
Pistons will hit valves and bend them. Don't do your timing belt unless you are experienced at doing that job.

Change belts on 2002 kia optima

Not sure what engine you have , but I had an 02 rio with the 1.5 L . The serpentine belt did not have a tensioner (spring loaded) pulley , the belt tightness was adjusted by pivoting the alternator mount.
If you are takling about the Timing belt , the tensioner pulley wont move (even though it is on a spring ) untill you loosen the bolt in the center.

Timing belt tensioner

On the Rio 2002, the tensionner is only used to apply pressure to the timing belt (installation) and cannot be adjusted. Once install the tensionner is "auto adjust" using a spring. If you need to adjust it,may be it time to change the timing belt KIT. Around 60,000 M.
