When driving on highway car feels like it is running over several bumps....something like riding on the edge of road where you hit grooves to let you know you need to move over. What is that?

    Either your tire(s) need balancing or you have a bulge developing. Either way it means a blowout is coming. You will do yourself a favor to have it looked at quite soon.

Take your car to a tire store and have them check the tires for you. It sounds like your have a broken belt in one of your radial tires.

I heard something snap and then noticed that the rear of the car drives very bumpy


Can you provide more info? Did you hit a bump? What do you mean by 'drives bumpy?' Does it ride rough, or does it go up and down a lot after you hit a bump, or something else? Can you further describe the snap you heard, and what was going on when you heard it and immediately afterward (e.g., driving 40 mph on a paved road, hit a pot hole, heard a loud 'breaking' sound as if something snapped/broke, and the ride of the car seemed to immediately change to being more harsh/rough)? Have you had any work done recently, such as tires changed or rotated, struts replaced, wheel alignment, or brakes replaced? Did anything else change (e.g., now when you hit a bump, you hear a new noise in the rear)? Were you carrying anything heavy in the trunk or back seat? I had a '99 Corolla for several years, and had zero problems other than a worn out driver's door handle and a couple of cracked windshields. Great car choice!

You need to change your STRUTS, depending on your Springs, you may need to change them too if you want a Smoother Ride

I have a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. There is a "violent" vibration that occurs only when you are going 40-60 MPH and you hit a bump or pot hole on the highway. The front end begins to...


Vibration from about 40-60 mph is usually attributed to wheel balancing, but the onset when you hit a bump seems to indicate play in the steering linkages (tie rods etc) or suspension members and stabiliser bar rubbers but you had that all checked out, that brings us back to the wheel balancing.

My back wheel when it hit a pot hole or any other bump in the street it bounce or not enough bounce to it ...the struts are ok an suspension is ok I was told so whats goin on..can u help me


I not sure if I fully understand your question. Are you asking should your car be bouncing more when you hit a bump or pot hole?

Well this is how struts and shocks are suppose to work: Struts and shocks are suppose to assist in providing a smooth ride, when you hit a bump or pot hole the struts and shocks absorb the force so you won't feel the full impact when driving. A good set of struts and shocks will eliminate excessive bouncing when driving or when you come across bumps and other mishaps in the road. So inconclusion if your car is not doing a whole lot of bouncing when you are driving that is a good thing, because that means your struts and shocks are doing their job and that means there is nothing wrong with them.

Hi Tony,

There is a problem with either the the wheel integrity, the steering linkage or all the above.

This is a dangerous and potentially life threatening situation.

As someone who has lived through a ball joint breaking off of it's connecting rod, I can tell you first hand that a steering wheel that doesn't steer is no fun at highway speeds.

Please have your vehicle looked at by a pro.
If you drive it, drive it slow, but drive it to a mechanic.

Car shuts off while driving. usually while its still moving, I can put it in neutral and restart. In the beginning, it only happened when I hit a bump in the road. Now it just happens.


I had a similar problem. When I was driving on highway with 70 mph, the car suddenly stalled everything went off. I managed to get off the road then I tried to start the car, it did not start. After 5 minutes I tried again and it started running but after several hours it stopped while driving again. Took it to the dealer, had the ignition switch changed and it solved the problem. Costed $300. ( There is also a recall on all 99 Acuras for the switch. Mine had been replaced so they did not treat it as a recall. If yours was never replaced you can have it replaced for free)

Terrible rear end rattle


It's probably the rear sway bar links. If you can jack your car up and check right behind both rear wheels you will be abale to see the sway bar which is connected to short links about 5in long with ball joints.

If either of them are broken or not connected anymore it can cause some pretty loud noises when you ride on rough roads or hit bumps. They run about $35 per link so it's not a very expensive repair.

Recommended tyre pressures (touring) for 1987 Corolla FX


There should be a sticker on your door, or door post, or glove box, that tells recommended pressures. I'm guessing 30 to 35 psi. When in doubt, I go few psi lower than max. stamped on tire to start, then back it down 2 psi or so at a time until I get the ride, feel & handling that I like, then I watch the tread after a good drive down the highway. Dark on outside edges of tires, lighter in middle,air too low, add 2 psi at a time. Dark in center but lighter on outside edges, too much, remove 2 psi. & retry. Good ride, good handling, tread same all across, bingo, then I note it. Add few more pounds when carrying full load, back off to my notes for normal driving. Ride feels rougher than normal over bumps, lower it 2 psi. etc. etc. etc.
