Outside compressor fan won't spin without a nudge

The compressor fan won't spin when a/c unit turns on unless I give it a little help and then after that everything works fine. There doesn't seem to be any unusual noises once the fan starts spinning nor does there seem to be anything that is binding the on the fan as it spins freely. Any ideas?

Hi,

either you can lubricate it by spraying wd40 on the bushings. Although usually fan motors are permanently lubricated there are still dust particles that get through and cause it not to spin.

Compressor/Condensor fan need to be turned by hand to get it started. Do I need a new fan motor or could this be a larger issue.

If the fan does indeed run ok without any bearing noise and the blade spins freely when you push it and then runs ok your motor start capacitor is bad on the motor. This is usually a small metal oval shaped can with two wire leads attached to it to help kick the motor armature into spinning when your ac unit first turns on.

The capacitor is about 4 to 6 uf (microfarads) and at is available at a local electrical supply house and is under $10 and if your handy with small tools this could be replaced by yourself if you are willing. BE SURE TO PULL the OUTSIDE POWER DISCONNET before taking any covers off. 240 volts ac for the compressor motor and fan motor plus even the 110 volt control power will kill you before you can blink! The control relay from the thermostat in your home is 24 volts ac. Get a friend with a voltmeter to verify the circuits are truly dead before you attempt repairs. Good luck and use a voltmeter to make sure the power to the ac unit is off! Regards, Dennis

Carrier tech zero heat pump is not working correctly. Air conditioning not working. The fan will not start spinning on it's own. I have to give it a spin and then it will go. There is no water from...

Pretty sure the capacitor is bad. That is why the fan and compressor are not working properly.
The compressor is actually not running and the fan not spinning without a boost is a sure sign the capacitor is bad.
Turn the power off to the condensing unit (outside unit). Remove the service panel and look for a metal cylinder with wires going to the top of it. If the top of this cylinder is domed up or misshapen, then that is your problem. If you try to repair this yourself, make sure you get the same microfarad (mfd) capacitor and that you put the wires back exactly as they came off. There is a "c", a "fan", and a "herm" connection on the top of the capacitor. See which wires go to these markings and put back the exact same.
Good luck and hope this helps.

My RUDD central a/c keeps cutting off, the inside vents still have air coming out of them but not cold. When I go to check the outside unit it is either completely off or running but the top fan is not...

The switch that you are resetting is the manual reset high pressure switch. It is there for a reason, to tell you something is wrong. You having to start fan manually tells me that the fan run capictor is bad. Get the capictor changed. If you keep resetting the switch you could burn out the compressor, doesnt make any sense to burn up a 800.00 compressor for a 10.00 item. hope this helps.

Ruud Achiever® Series 13 SEER the fan will not spin I have checked the breaker is there a reset button inside the unit?

There is a reset button on the outside of the unit near where the tubing and wiring comes into the unit. The button is encased with a red plastic cover. If the unit is making noise but the fan is not spinning, the problem may be related to the fan itself. First with the unit turned of, see if the fan spins freely. Then fire the unit up again to A/C and see if the fan is not moving. If not, carefully nudge the fan blade with screw drive in the direction it normally moves. if the fan engages, most likely the bushings are old and need to be replaced; RUUD may only sell the entire fan assembly.

Home ac compressor fan won't turn all the time.

your looking at $175-$225 for just the single phase motor depending where you purchase, I just replaced mine(identical unit) due to screaming dry bearings, if you replace it your self make sure to keep new wires tight along side of unit or fan will cut them if loose and its a fan- 5mfd/25mfd compressor@440volt cap

Somethings aperson cant fix without a service tech. First it could be wire burnt of capacitor going to compressor. Second it could be bad capacitor. There is a dual capacitor on the ouside unit one side says herm that runs the compressor. Turn power off to check to see if wire is burnt of the herm terminal or the C ternminal. Wire burnt off compressor common terminal.. Could be locked up compressor. Unless you know how to troubleshoot unit. You may have to call service tech. Cost if bad cap. is about 100 to 150. But unit wont run without it. Rus

OUTSIDE UNIT OPERATES BUT FAN DOESN'T TURN AND UNIT DOESN'T COOL.

the motor could just be locked in place from sitting...take a stick or something and try to see if it spins be sure of rotation! you can also give it a little nudge while it is on and it will take off! if this happens then you have a bad start compacitor but no there are no fuses that only protect the motor!
