Vista 64bit. A few days old. Now getting a blank white square in middle of desktop. If I refresh desktop, background image again fills desktop until I open another window, and then it is back.

That is very strange. I have seen virues do strange things with the desktop and screen savers before. Boot into safe mode (press F8 before Vista Logo comes up) See if you get the same problem.

Turn off any screen savers you have and run a full virus scan.

If this still doesn't fix it search for the system restore wizard in the windows help. Follow the instructions and pic a recent restore point. It should create a restore point each time you install something new.

This will remove the configuration (but not the files) for anything you have installed since the restore point. But one of those programs may have been the cause or your problem. So reinstall one at a time and test inbetween.

Good luck

I am using windows sp2 os.i am not able to install avast antiviru

If the antivirus is not genuine but one thats downloaded from the net, then most probably it itself caries a virus with it hence your PC is rejecting it. Try to install a genuine antivirus and see the behaviour of the PC......sodeep

Minimizing screens - multiple

Personally I think that Avast might be your best bet and it is free. Avast is like AVG, however from my experience I have seen Avast catch a lot of virues that AVG didnt catch. Also another thing that you need to do is run Spybot or any other spyware cleaner in Safe Mode, this way the viruses or spyware wont re-install themselves while you are running the scans. To download avast, just go to and download/install the home edition. Once you have downloaded and installed it, let it run a boot-time scan ( it will ask you this when you first install Avast ). Also you try other spyware cleaners such as adaware ( and/or Windows Defender ( BTW, if you decide to run AVG and Spybot in safe mode and dont know how to get into safe mode, do the following:

1. At boot-up, continually press F8 until a list comes up
2. Choose Safe Mode from the list

Let me know if this helps you out.
