My thermostat doesn't follow the schedule. The heat comes on 2 hours before the schedule.

This is normal. Your thermostat works off of a PID loop which enable it to kick on based on previous run times on how long it took to get the temperature up or down to the setpoint. this is so that the desired temperature of the space ie the setpoint is achieved by the time the thermostat is programmed for. This is called "smart technology"

Engine temperature does not reach much above cold. Thermostat recently replaced

Sounds like they put the wrong temperature of thermostat in you car. If they put in a thermostat that had a lower temperature range than the original. This causes it to open to early and circulate cold water which would give the symptoms you are talking about.

Heat stopped working

There are several possible reasons as to why you are not getting any heat in your vehicle. 1) Low coolant level; check coolant level in radiator/reservoir to make sure that it is within operating range (check with engine cold). 2) Improperly operating thermostat. If your thermostat is stuck in the open position, the engine will not reach operating temperature and the engine coolant will provide little or no heat to the car heater. Check your coolant temperature gauge on the dash to make sure that it is the normal operating range. The thermostat will need replacing if the engine temperature is still in the low range after 10 minutes, or so, of running. 3) Plugged heater core. After engine has warmed up, place your hands on the two smaller coolant hoses that lead into the firewall/heater. Both hoses should be hot (the inlet slightly hotter than the outlet) If one hose is hot and the other is only warm or cold, than the heater core is likely plugged. I would recommend a cooling system flush in this case. 4) The heater control valve is not open. The heater control valve is a valve located in one of the smaller coolant hoses leading to the firewall/heater core. It is usually cable operated, but may also be operated by a vacuum motor. Make sure valve is moving when the temperature lever or knob on your instrument panel is moved from cold to hot. If it does not move, and it is cable actuated, ensure that cable is connected to the valve arm and dash control lever. If it is vacuum controlled check small vacuum hose for kinks and leaks. Remove vacuum hose from valve and check for vacuum when heater control is moved from cold to hot. If vacuum is not present, there is a problem with the heater control (possibly a vacuum leak under the instrument panel or at the temperature control).

How to test electric water heater thermostats

1) Copy following links:

2) There is no reliable way to test electric water heater thermostats.
This is because testing requires rotating the temperature selector, which may cause stuck-thermostat to temporarily unstick. So thermostat appears to work normally.
Moreover, thermostat come out of calibration over time, and the temperature selector might be on 125 but tank temperature at 100, and there is no specific way to measure calibration.

3) I think it easier to replace both upper and lower thermostats to eliminate them as suspects when diagnosing wide-range of electric water heater problems.

Lower thetermostatv temprature to 66. it's set to 77 right now and doesn't go lower

Question is not clear.
Add a comment and say what you want to do.

You have 240Volt electric water heater.
Lower thermostat is set as low as it can go at 77.
But you want water temperature set to 66?
First thing to remember is that water heater thermostat settings are approximate since they read temperatures through the steel tank wall.
Second thing is that thermostats for electric water heater are generic, and are not made for lower temperature range settings. This is probably since most people complain that water is not hot enough.
I'm looking at a generic lower thermostat from Lowes right now. The low temperature setting is 90 degrees F.
Looking at some older thermostats from a drawer right now: one does not have a lower temperature mark, the other is a Reliance with low temp of 95, the old craftmaster goes down to 80.
So I don't even have a thermostat that goes as low as the one you have, except for gas water heater thermostats that traditionally can be set to 50 degrees for vacation mode to prevent freezing.
More thermostats can be seen on following link:

I need a new thermostat (or is it a safety cut-out) for the heater element on a Zanussi 910R

Thermostats are temperature  cut out devices. An advanced form of temperature control could be achieved using a RTD probe and a temperature controller. By this way operating temperatures fall in between maximum and minimum ranges that could be manually preset. Thermostats are the last line of safety for any heater coil / element.

Honeywell RTH2310 thermostat temp variance

Yes you can change that by change the number of cycles per hour that your t-stat looks from for youe furnace. Lower the cycles per hour number and it will increase the range.

You can see how to do it here

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!!
