Low MPH/RPM issue

running on the road, ! still. vast . and well known and easy to fix.
Ok, there are 2 macro causes here.

1. engine weak.
2. or transmission slips or will not up-shift 1,2,3,4 gears

#1 has vast causes micro view, bad fuel, bad spark or weak fuel pressure and caused weak injections and low engine power

if the transmission bad, the RPM of he engine goes real high but MPH not so high. (per you yes)
check fuse first
then get the car serviced, if still bad.

RPM high means (no tachometer in dash) means hear the engine spin up fast even screams.

which engine the 3.6? v6?
that shudder is called MISFIRE.
get a tune up yet, even $1.49 spark plugs?
no its not the trans,
if it dont slip, its not trans, (see RPM races? that is slip or too low gear)
if it shifting to the right gears, its not the trans can you count them?
is the CEL lamp glowing or flashing driving, is yes, that means
scan me now. in fact scanning while it shudders, is like (magic)
why start guessing, do a tuneup,
then scan it.
if its is misfire the PCM will tell you what cylinder misfires.

are your spark plugs 6 years old, if yes, why?

Is this a manual or automatic transmission? When was the last time the fluid was changed? If it's a 4 speed and a 4 cylinder engine than that could be the right RPM. It could also be the overdrive is not working. Some SUVs have a overdrive override button on or near the shifter.

Unless there is a check engine light on it's not a solenoid or electronic control issue, it's hydraulic or mechanical.
Try changing the fluid and use the correct Toyota specified fluid or equivalent, Valvoline MaxLife is a good substitute.
If the drained fluid has any metal particles or friction material it's sign of deeper problems.

Most chances that the clutch is weak

check tranny fluid. if tranny fluid checks good then buy a bottle of "lucas transmission additive". this is the best on market. you can buy at atuozone, oreillys or napa. the transmission fluid can only be checked while engine is warm and running in park. another stupid question. when you back up does the car make a funny squeaking nosie? if so then your u-joints are the culprit.

Not sure what is causing it, but it sounds like you're running on 3 cyllinders. Check plugs, wires, timing . timing belt may have jumped, bad injector, low fuel pressure.

The rpm is too low. let an expert reset to 3.4 for u.

Possible transmission problem, take the car for a scan.

That is normal,If you do the same speed in 4th gear the rpm's will almost double.

The rpm's will repond faster in a manual than an automatic.

In a manual the engine supplies the power required directly to the gear that you have selected thus the engine rpm's will increase or decrease as needed.
