Question about ASUS P5QC Motherboard - Intel P45, Socket 775, ATX, DDR3/DDR2, Audio, PCI Express 2.0, Gigabit LAN,

Connecting my PSU to my Motherboard

I have a Zalman 500W ZM500-HP power, an Asus P5Q Turbo MB and an Intel C2D 3.0 Hhz CPU. I can't get the power supply to seem likes it working. Currently I have the power supply mounted in the case and the MB and CPU connected to it but nothing else is installed or connected. I was trying to test if the PSU works at all and therefore only connected up the MB and CPU. But the PSU fan doesn't spin up at all when powered on and neither does the CPU fan. All I see on the MB is an SB_PWR light goes green. I can't even get other fans, when connected, to start spinning. Do I have a broken PSU? What are the minimal connections I need to ensure the PSU will start up, I read somewhere that PSU's won't spin up unless power to the MB is connected?

Thanks Mary - Memory and Video Card added to build and still nothing, only this SB_PWR light comes on and the PSU makes a very high pitch, low decibel squeal but not fans start moving, not the PSU fan nor the CPU fan. I guess I'll go grab another PSU from a local shop today and give it a tray.

The bare essentials to start a computer are PSU, Motherboard, CPU, RAM and Video.

Its possible the PSU arrived DOA. Though I've only had 2 DOA PSU's in the 15 years I've been building custom computers.

Hope this helps.

I have had an Asus machine with a P5Q Deluxe Motherboard LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX since new. It was returned by an unhappy customer, but I figured I could live with the problem or even solve it. The deal is,...

Take a close look at the capacitors on the motherboard -- if the top of any capacitor is a "dome", rather than being perfectly flat, that capacitor is "dying". If there is any "brown-rust" on top of any capacitor, that capacitor is "dying", i.e., failing to do its job of regulating voltages. Fluctuating voltages can cause a "freeze".

Try changing the RAM -- this is very easy to do.

Try changing the CPU -- this takes more effort & skill to do.

Try changing the video-card -- this is easy to do.

Hi, I need standard spec info of VGA built on Asus P5GC-MX 1333 whether 64 Mb or 128 Mb. Many thanks & regards, Richard

you can use up to a maximum of 224 mb of your computer's RAM for the onboard video chip to use. You can install a video card with any amount of memory (which would give you a lot better video performance).

That Motherboard have a PCI-Express x16 so the 6970 will fit without problem, these are powerful cards so you should have a good PSU (powersupply)

Try these....
Overheating problem in your PROCESSOR!
Check the temp in your BiOS and the setting of your processor!
Check also the power supply and upgrade it to hifgher wattage!
Clean your processor HEAT SiNK, dust and dirt might have acumulated!
Check the HEAT sink position, if its flatly fitted on top of procie, and scrape the old silicon paste between ur proci and heat sink and put a NEW ONE!

Encountered this kind of prob.. the prob is in the PSU unit(Power Supply Unit)!

The only thing i can suggest is remove one of your RAM sticks and see if the machine will boot. I had this problem with mine and it turned out that one of my RAM slots was faulty and would not boot if both RAM slots had RAM in them.
