Laptop fell off of table. The computer still works but the monitor only shows part of the picture. Is the monitor ruined or can it be fixed?

Well depends alot on what kind of condition the monitor is on now. in most cases you would have to replace the lcd panel inside the display cover.

alot of people sell laptop parts on ebay, you might find a replacement panel from there. www.ebay.com (stay away from the 16GB memory sticks and players, if they are too cheap they are fake, probably 1GB less or more hacked to show a bigger size test with H2TESTW 1.4)

Unfortunately it sounds like this one is toast.

If you're looking for a replacement, I was snooping around and saw this one for $350: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/sys/1179340318.html.
This guy is only selling locally (SanFran, CA), but you might be able to find a similar deal elsewhere and get away with simply swapping hard drives.

NOTE: This only makes sense if you're heavily invested in your current computer, because at $350+ you are so close to the purchase price of a new 'low end' computer that beats out your old one hands down.

Good luck!

Hello My Toshiba Satellite a75 s229 Notebook Screen is Black and Glass inside screen looks cracked. Laptop fell 3'' ft. off table onto carpeted floor. Laptop powers up fine and I can hear windows start up...

Hi there,

The way to find out if it's just the screen is to connect the laptop to an external monitor. Pay attention to the F keys when you connect the laptop. On most Toshibas, you'll see a small depiction on the F5 key of a laptop next to a monitor. You either have to press that key alone, or hold down the fn key and then press the F5 key and let go to transfer the signal to the external monitor.

If the external monitor shows up good and you can perform all other functions on your laptop while viewing the monitor, you need only replace the laptop LCD. If it does not display correctly, then you're into the next round of troubleshooting.

Hope it works as above.

Good Luck

When I start my computer, the monitor shows the message "No Signal R G B" The colors are off. I get Blue, no red and a distorted green. Sometimes the colors are perfect. It's a 15" TFT LCD monitor

If all connections are tight. See if someone has a laptop or another PC to hookup to the monitor to pinpoint if its a video card issue or a monitor related issue.

Dell E173FP shows nothing

The backlight may have died. LCD monitors work by shining a light through the active diodes.

My laptop is on and plugged to the monitor, but the monitor says no signal

You have to switch your laptop to a different display mode. Usually it's done by pressing Fn key and F8 - look for a description near this key showing rectangle / rounded rectangle, or text "CRT / LCD".
Usually there are 3 modes:
LCD (internal laptop display) only
LCD + CRT - the picture shows on both displays
CRT - the picture shows only on the external display, allowing you to set a different screen resolution, equivalent to the external monitor's optimum resolution.

I'm using this as an additional monitor for a HP 10" netbook and the picture is stretched & distorted & doesn't fill screen. The vertical adjustment just moves the whole thing up and remains...

Solution goes this way, to maintain the aspect ratio of the monitor, take note of this. Your HP 10inch notebook have different resolution compare to your additional monitor, But I'm sure you selected the dual view mode or the duplicate mode that is why you have distorted display on your additional monitor, to let the additional monitor decide and maximize its resolution, try using the extended view option, you can change the resolution of your additional monitor without affecting the resolution of your 10 inch laptop.

Starlogic 17'' as dual display not clear

Check and see if your NVIDIA drivers are up to date. Then try changing the resolution on your laptop to match the native resolution on the monitor and see if it works. If it does then you will need to look for the option to set custom resolutions on each monitor so that you can have both devices working at diferent resolutions if 1 is wide screen and the other is not.

Let me know if this does not work and you need more help.

My screen suddenly gets distorted.

Test your laptop by connecting its video ouput (base of the computer at the back) to a known working monitor. Then power on the laptop and see if the known working monitor behaves the same way your laptop's monitor does. That will narrow down the possible causes.
