A have a key but is not accepted anymore after my harddisk broke down.
If you are talking about Microsoft Windows, you can enter the key and then follow the prompts that let you activate by phone. They are understanding and will update your key for you, as long as it is only installed on one machine. Have the box or sticker that has the key written on it handy when you call.

Or new pre installed laptops product key embedded in BOIS , u can use some R/W utility and find the key and activate again.
