Question about Jenn-Air JSD2789GEB Side by Side Refrigerator

Open Question

Suspect defrost issues with JSB2789GEB Jenn-Air/Maytag

Noticed some buzzing noise, sometimes when compressor would shut off, could this have been a defrost relay trying to switch on?. This is a side by side, the freezer door got left slightly open a few times, and then fridge side was not as cool as it should be. Looked at coils in freezer and they were frosted up thus no air-flow to fridge. Manually defrosted and was ok again for a while. Now I think the defrost cycle may not be working at all, have not noticed any buzzing like before. Freezer stays well cold, but fridge eventually gets a bit warmer. Please help with what to test/check, etc.

Thanks, the fridge still seems to cycle on & off ok, but when I check behind the panel ( coils ), seem to have quite a build up of frost, think that it gets too much and air-flow can not get to fridge side. How can I make sure defrost cycle is working?

Other posts seem to think it could be: Adaptive defrost control board
Is this easy to replace or test?

As I was afraid, some new units use a printed circuit board and I know of no way to force it into defrost mode. You'd have to take the panel off the evaporator and catch it in the defrost cycle and see if there is heat being generated by the heating element in the evaporator. Perhaps someone with more expertise in the circuit board style defroster can help. Check web sites, youtube included for any helpful information and don't forget the local library. What is the warranty on the fridge? Have you contacted the maker of the unit?

The buzz may have been the heater melting the ice on the evaporator. You will want to check the defrost timer and see if it is working. Research defrost timer and visit Jenn-Airs web site for a parts breakdown to help you locate it or look at your manual it should have a parts breakdown. Does the fridge run all the time?

SOURCE: Re: Refrigator will not stay cold

defrost problems are caused by 3 things
bad: 1) defrost timer/ timer board 2) defrost heater (in freezer) or burnt wire going to the heater 3) bi-metal thermostat (round metal piece attached to the coils with     at least 2 wires going to it)
a good technician can test components without the machine running. all you need is a simple $5 meter any tech that gets angry, show him/her the door!

SOURCE: freezer works but refrig has 60 degree temp .evap coil is caked

Hi: Did you check the defrost heater itself? I checked Jennair and Sears parts to no avail. If you didn't check the heater it will be at the bottom of the freezer behind where you removed the back cover. A glass tube with a coil in it. If the coil or tube is broken replace that insead. I hope I helped, Jeff I found a website with the defrost timer, but not the location of the timer on the fridge.

The newest defrost feature in modern fridges is the electronic adaptive defrost control board. Maytag/Jenn Air has one version, see put this adaptive defrost style of fridge into defrost, short with a small screwdriver between L1 and test on the adaptive defrost board, wait 3 seconds and you should hear a "click" noise from the relay and the fridge will shut off and go through a defrost cycle.

Jenn Air JSD2789GEW side by side Refrigerator not cold

If the adaptive defrost timer is out (hidden circuit board at top of fridge behind light panel), the freezer coils will ice over & prevent the air from circulating over to the fridge side. If the defroster coil or temp sensor is out (lower freezer side behind large panel), it will cause the same effect. If the "start relay" on the compressor is going bad, it may not allow the compressor to come on when its supposed to. My unit suffered from this. It still cooled, but not nearly as well as it was right after I replaced the adaptive defrost timer. I noticed I heard clicking for around 15 seconds.. this was the relay trying to function & activate the compressor. Perhaps the faulty adaptive defrost timer caused the compressor relay to go bad? Regardless, those are the usual suspects I'd tackle first. They can all be tested to prevent the expense of "part changing" Adaptive defrost timer is ranging from $35-$79 online..your loca maytag/jenn air dealer will have these in stock as they are the most common culprit. Relay is $10.50, defrost heating element around $50. These are all very simple & easy to replace. Pretty much just a philips screwdriver & removing a few panels. Remember, ALWAYS make sure any electrical device is unplugged before servicing, also, some capacitors (i.e.,around compressor) will hold a charge like a battery & will zap you. Always test the wire with a meter before touching. The real expense is having somebody do the work for you. Good luck.

Amana/Maytag ACD2234HRS sometime not working

If your compressor is running with the noise you described, I would make sure the parts that were replace on compressor are working properly. Also use a amp meter and get a reading on amp draw while it is humming. Anything that is above normal readings for the compressor would indicate compressor is bad or the relay and starter are not working properly. I need a series number also like a number 15 before the model number, Thanks, Sea Breeze

JBR2086HES - Jenn-Air

If it was buzzing then click, the click would mean that the thermal overload has activated. This would happen if the compressor is drawing high amperage due to a breakdown of insulation on one of the starter or run windings. What he says is very possible.

Maytag refrigerator clicking noise and stopped working

How long a period of time have you noticed this noise? If it just started and the refrigerator just stopped it could have entered its defrost cycle. When the defrost heaters come on you may hear the heat causing some expansion. After a few minutes(18-22) the defrost cycle ends and the refrigerator will restart.

Freezer/Fridge work SOMETIMES

Sounds like you have a bad relay on the compressor or a bad compressor. If the compressor is a Tecumpseh brand then it is most likely the problem.
