What type of hammer arrestor do I buy to fix banging pipes after installing a new Moen posi-temp cartridge?

Banging pipes are a result of improper piping support. If the piping is secured, the banging will stop. If your only option is to install chambers for water hammer, any will do. Their only purpose is to hold air.

Noisy water pipes when neighbours use water

Install air chamber to cushion sudden-stop of flowing water.
Water flow coming to sudden stop is called water hammer, and will bang pipes, but also loosen plumbing joints, causing leaks.

Air chamber has to be vertical, and about 18" long, with cap on top.
By code each Hot and Cold line at each tap will have air chamber located behind the wall. So there are two air chambers at each tap.

In your case, you can probably add air chamber to your Hot and Cold lines and solve problem for both dwellings.

Water hammer is caused because water does not compress like air.
So when long column of water suddenly stops... the whole pipe-full of water comes to sudden halt... and that water could weigh 1-1/2 pounds ... and just like a hammer head moving, the weight of water bangs the pipes to dissipate energy, causing noise.

At the startup of every washing cycle the washer slams the water on and off and bangs around our pipes. I called in a plumber who said we could tear into the wall now or wait until a leak appears. No of...

Slamming of the pipes happens because of the water pressure and and the sudden opening of the water solenoid. The solenoid has to open suddenly as it is activated by a magnetic coil that pulls a plunger valve open. There is a spring (return spring) on the back of the plunger that compresses and gives the plunger a return power push to seat the plunger when the power is turned off. In the past few years, plumbers have been loosely connecting pipes in hangers so that they move with the change in water pressure so as not to bang and cause a noise that upsets the home owner. Also many homes are plumbed with plastic pipe that stops a lot of the pipe noise. Most washing machines and refrigerator ice makers that have water solenoids make some noise, but engineering has mitigated a lot of this with the return springs that have the strength to slow the action of the plunger in the solenoid, but yet open wide enough to allow full water inlet.

I suspect that your water pipes are not slung properly to mitigate the bang caused by sudden pressure drop, thus you most likely would get a pipe bang from any washers. You could try changing the solenoid in your washer on the premise that the return spring is weak, but this probably will not solve all of the problem. The banging is just upsetting and does no harm as it is a natural action.

You could test this out by hooking a garden hose to the water outlet at the washing machine and using a trigger release sprayer on the garden hose. When you trigger the garden hose, I suspect that you may hear a pipe bang.

Installed new presure cartridge. Nwo pipes are banging to the point of them breaking .Never did it before

I would recommend going to a hardware or plumbing store and picking up some "hammer arrestors" to put on your washing machine valves, this can help with that. This pipe banging can be due to pipe strapping that has come off but is most often caused by excessive water pressure.

Hot water: Pipes make a banging noise when turned on full force.

Hi, That banging is sometimes called a water hammer. It is made when the water hits an elbow in the piping with a force and bangs into the pipe itself. It is more likely to occur in a long run of pipe. This can be reduced or eliminated by installing an empty tube verticle in the piping near where the hammer is occuring. This tube can be found at most building supply stores. The tube is a pocket of air that acts to absorbe the extra pressure from the piping and stops it from hammering.

Banging sound comes from furnance pipes

This is caused by the expansion and contraction of the pipes as they heat up and cool down. The pipes must be touching something else at the time that this is happening. It is completely normal.

Water drip into washer, used to gush in. Now water pipes bang, whine

The problem is the 10 cent rubber washer in a shut off valve in your plumbing. The brass screw that holds this washer has corroded and the washer has come loose. It now floats around inside the valve and the water flow can be blocked at one time, whistle, howel and make bangs at another. It could be any valve including the main shut off. You can listen to the pipes but the sound travels, so you are looking for the loudest spot. A new washer and screw could fix it, but sometimes the screw is broken off requiring a new valve stem. Be prepared to replace the whole valve.
