The screen will have lots of mostly gray vertical lines, can't get rid of these lines
When I turn on the netbook, the screen has multiple lines, and I can't see the wallpaper. I cannot get rid of this, so I
have tried to take out the battery for a few minutes, turning it completely off, rebooting it. and I also tried unplugging electric, and also just closing the lid. However, nothing has an effect.
Re: the screen will have lots of mostly gray vertical...
Sounds to me like the LCD screen is going out. Now, it could also be the graphics board/chip on the laptop but I don't believe so in this situation.
If it is the monitor (and I suspect it is just that) then you'll need to replace it. I highly recommend ScreenSurgeons.com for replacement screens. I have used them several times and have always had great support. They have videos with step by step directions on how to replace the screen yourself.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

HOW TO FIX LED TV VERTICAL LINES ON SCREEN 55" MODEL LG ... TV Repair Help for Vertical & Horizontal Lines on Your TV Screen ..
The T CON board of the television is bad, you need to replace this The T-CON (Timing Control or LCD controller) board (on the LCD panel assembly). It transfer the universal image signal of TTL and LVDS signal to specific TFT (Thin Film Transistor) LCD. This is the interface board that talks to the Logic board and the LCD panel to produce pictures on the screen. White/gray glowing screen when it fails or not getting the voltage from the logic board (the 5 or 12vdc is supplied by switched transistor on the logic board). Notes: T-CON board is mounted under the metal cover shield. Common failures: Scrambled pictures, Lines, multiple pictures, color smears/blotches, rolling pictures after warm up. Blown surface mounted fuse. No pictures, very dark screen almost like there is no backlights.
Try connecting an external monitor to the your laptop and see if the vertical line is also present on the monitor. If the monitor display is fine, then your laptop’s LCD display panel is defective. If the monitor also displays the vertical line, then your problem is with either the video card or motherboard located inside your laptop. Not sure if the Compaq Presario has an external monitor plug, but if it does the above procedure can be applied to that one as well.
Multiple stripes all over the screen? Vertical or horizontal?
If it's only like an inch vertical lines put a mark on the cabinet where exaclty the line is, turn off the TV then open the back, you'll see lots of ribbon wires (gold color) from the plasma panel it self going to buffer boards, using the mark find the closest ribbon wire where the line is showing then remove and clean the contacts, make sure to reseat it properly when putting it back otherwise you'll just add more lines or black bar on the screen if pins are not seating properly.
But do not be afraid if the lines get worst just turn the power off right away and reaset the ribbon wire till you get it correctly.
DO NOT try to do this while the TV is on oherwise you'll burn COF (Chip on film) on the panel and you'll end up replacing the whole PDP.
I've had the same problem. A temporary fix that I have found is to turn up the contrast all the way (press [2nd] then hold down the up arrow) until the screen becomes mostly black. Then turn the contrast back down (press [2nd] then hold down the down arrow) until it is at a normal level. If you can get rid of all the white lines when you turn up the contrast the screen will be back to normal. Unfortunately this does not permanently fix the problem because I cannot get rid of all the lines and it seems to be getting progressively worse each time it start up the calculator.
