Western Digital Elements HD doing a clicking noise and no access

Well i have a Western Digital Elements 500GB, it has 2 years or more it always worked fine to me till today, i always worked with it connected to my computer. Today when i started my computer it was really slow starting windows up and i noticed my Elements HD doing a clicking noise over and over again, and windows can't recognise it, well at least i cant access it with explorer but i can safely remove hardware and it has the information of the HD normal as if it was ok. Any help?

Well i believe it is not a power adapter problem because it keeps flashing the blue light, but it is just flashing, turns on, turns off and keeps like that while the drive makes the click sound. BUT i still feel the drive spinning. :S

It might be the power adapter. I had one of these and two Maxtor external drives that just clicked that way and it turned out their adapters were bad. You can check with another adapter if you can borrow one from another drive, or use a replacement from Radio Shack. Make sure you get the same voltage and current rating marked on the original.

If the adapter isn't at fault, the small circuit board in the enclosure may be the trouble. You can remove the drive from the case and connect it to directly to a computer power supply to see if spins up properly.

If the drive still doesn't spin, it's bad. This is a common way for a drive to fail. Unfortunately, this leaves you with a drive that you can't read. Hopefully you've backed your important data up on CD or DVD.

A bad power adapter doesn't necessarily mean a dead adapter. The three units I worked on all lit up but the adapter was still the trouble. They all worked just fine once I stuck new adapters on them. The only way to know for sure is to check the drive with a power supply you know is good.

Is this a plug and play drive?

In most computers that are encountered, devices that are plugged into the USB ports are "plug & play" capable. There are numerous scenarios that can turn this function off inadvertantly such as a virus, data corruption or driver changes. In order to fix the issue and make an external device, such as a Western Digital Passport Elite hard drive "plug & play" capable, a user will have to make a few system changes. Click "Start" and "Run," then type gpedit.msc Click on "Administrative Templates," from the tree then click on the "System" folder. Double click on "Turn off Autoplay." Select the "Disabled" option and ensure it applies to all drives. Hope this helps,

Replacement power cables

Can find them on eBay, if you can narrow down on the manufacture date. For the model I had, either Acbel AD6008 OR Asian Power Devices (APD) DA-30C01 work. I ordered a replacement which worked - but my real problem was needing a new hard drive casing. So now I have 2 power cords I don't need...but at least I have my data.

Mybook of 500GB has a strange noise in disk

If it's making a clicking, rattling, or "leaking" (like the sound of air whistling out of a balloon) then the drive may be damaged and it's time to contact Western Digital support.
