Question about Dyson Ball DC24 Bagless Upright Vacuum

Open Question

Brush bar not turning

I changed the filter, pushed the reset button and checked all the seals. I even took the bar out and cleaned any string wrapped around it and it still won't rotate. What should I do?

SOURCE: The brush bar on my Dyson DC17 stopped turning.

If this model has a brush control - i.e a roller at the side of the model which controls brush to spin or not, then its a protected brush model - therefore even if the drive belt is intact the Dyson would have to be repaired by a service personnel or professional. The brush protection isn't able to be taken apart and sounds like it may well have slipped off due to tension.

SOURCE: Brush not rotating

drive belt most likely broken.

SOURCE: While operating machine, brush does not rotate.

Likely the wires are broken under the left hand cover not a difficult fix. Unplug the machine and remove the 4 torx screws and an access panel at the side of the ball. replace wires with new or re-connect with a splice. ensure wires are long enough to allow movement and you don't trap the wires when you replace the covers. about a 20 min job with the right tools

The suction head brush is not turning, it has been cleaned and the black drive connection feels like it is connected internally to the drive motor.

That's called your brush bar.
You're missing something. One of three things is happening-
There's either something caught up/wrapped around the brush bar, causing it not to move, like a long string wrapped around it a multitude of times, a blockage going in, or the filter is in need of being washed.. Dirty filters can cause limited to no function.

Read below and at then the VERY bottom is a link to your manual, which you need to review.

• Press the 'Filter' button so you can remove the cyclone and clear bin unit.
• Check and wash the filter regularly according to instructions to maintain performance.
• The filter may require more frequent washing if vacuuming fine dust or if used mainly in 'HIGH CONSTANT SUCTION' mode.
• Wash the filter with cold water only. Do not use detergents.
• Do not put the filter in a dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, oven, microwave or near a open flame.
• IMPORTANT: After washing please leave at least 12 hours to dry completely before refitting.
• Place the dry filter into the recess of the handle.
• Fit the base of the handle into the aperture on the base of the cyclone and clear bin unit. Push both halves together until the 'Filter' button engages and locks into place.

• Ensure the appliance is disconnected from the charger before looking for blockages.
• Do not operate while checking for blockages. Failure to do so could result in personal injury.
• Beware of sharp objects when checking for blockages.
• Refit all parts securely before using.
• Clearing blockages is not covered by your guarantee.
• If you cannot clear an obstruction you may need to remove the brush bar. Use a coin to unlock the fastener marked with a padlock. Remove the obstruction, replace the brush bar and secure it by locking the fastener. Ensure it is fixed firmly before operating the appliance.

• This appliance is fitted with an automatically resetting thermal cut-out.
• Large items may block the tools or nozzle. If any part becomes blocked the appliance may overheat and automatically cut-out.
• Leave to cool down for 1-2 hours before checking the filter or for blockages.
• Clear any blockage before restarting.
• Refit all parts of the appliance securely before using.
• Clearing blockages is not covered by your guarantee.

Below, where the link says REDIRECT NOTICE, click on that. It will then take you to the user's manual download page. Allow your computer to open it. It will be in .pdf format. Make sure you have at least Adobe's PDF Reader, to view it.

Floatting brush makes it hard to go forward

Most vacuums have an adjustment at the front so when you go from linoleum floors to thick carpet you can raise or lower them. Try raising or lowering it. Also every vacuum with problems I've ever looked at has needed a serious cleaning. Hair gets caught and wrapped around the wheels, hair gets caught on the "beater" bars and slows down the whole vacuum. Finally string or thread gets caught around everything. My wife does a lot of cross stitch and knitting projects, so I have to dismantle and clean our vacs about once a month. Finally if the air filter is clogged, then air can't pass through it. Change the filter or rinse it out in the sink. You'll breath a little better after you do this too.

What does yellow exclamation point light mean

YELLO and RED mean danger - clogging, not brush turning, overheating, .... it is time to RESET -- turn it all off and let it sit for half hour - that is what the manual says, check the brush that is not clogged up and check the inlet to the hose and where the hose goes into the body from the head unit where the brush is - make sure those not clogged either. Turn it on, push the RESET button on left back side of head unit by the switch that changes height. The reset button is like a circuit breaker - stops unit when overheats, starts when reset. Yello is ERROR, and fix it before it turns red and stops all the way. Cheers!!!

My brush stop working

Barring any electrical failure or loose plug the most common cause for the vacuum brush to stop turning is belt clogged with debris or string.
Unplug the unit and check the brush for string or debris (Hair) wrapped around the pully on either end. Clear this and check the belt to make sure it has not broken, stripped or simply slipped off. Usually the bottom plate is held on with just a few screws. Easy to remove and check Belt slipped off or stripped replace. Belt slipped off you can sometimes put back on and be vacuuming in no time.
Anything wrapped around the spindle a pair of needle nose pliers comes in real handy here. If you have snagged a rug, sheet or sock etc.. check the manual for a reset button. Some vacuums have this and all it takes is clearing the chute then resetting the switch. Good luck hope this helps!

Agitator unit on Kenmore Progressive 116.25915503 won't spin. I have cleaned out all hair and string wrapped around it. Belt is good. It seems to spin on one side but stuck on the other. Could string be...

Pry the end caps off the brush bar, you will find hair and string wrapped up tight in the end. the bearing may also be shot, you can try and oil it up a bit to keep it spinning. <!-- from fixya rte -->
