Right Click "My Computer" and click properties.
from the properties menu on the Hardware tab click the device manager for windows XP else in Vista click you dont need to click the hardware tab just click the device manager on the top left

On the list of devices click the DVD/CD Rom Drives
on the open list you should see the name of your DVD ROM drive. If it has a caution sign on it then theres a problem with the driver. But if it does not have any sign on it then right click it and click uninstall.

Automatically your PC would scan fro hardware changes but if does not the click on Action and click scan for hardware changes. this would enable a fresh reinstallation of your DVD ROM.

If this does not solve the problem, turn off your computer and restart it and go to your bios using the F2 button or which ever button displayed at the bottom of the startup screen,

On the Bios, check your hardware devices to see if your DVD Drive is listed. if it is not listed then turn it off.

take out your DVD Drive from your computer by unscrewing the bolts holding it at the base close to the battery location. and slide it back in careful to make sure it sits perfectly in the connectors.

Turn it back on and try the Bios test again to see if its listed. if its not then probably your DVD drive is bad.

For further tests or repairs, see a technical repairer of your model of computer for a replacement or further physical tests

If you cannot eject the tray that means the power to your DVD ROM is not connected, You need to open the computer panel to the side and inspect the connections, make sure they are tightly connected. Be sure to power off your PC and unplug it from min power source before you do this.

If this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem "you only need to do the following" if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer Close all open programs Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control Class {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column. Upper Filters Lower Filters Upper Filters.bak Lower Filters.bak If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer
Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone. Hope this helps.

My computer no longer "sees"

hello
at end of this instruction set, see link to review more questions/answers,as your issue with CD/DVD ROM will vary .

This document applies to HP and Compaq desktop computers with Windows XP, Me, and 98. Use this document to make Windows and the CD writing software recognize the CD or DVD writer drive. Start at Step 1; do not skip to other sections until Step 1 has been completed. Step 1: Does Windows detect the CD or DVD drive? Use Device Manager to determine if Windows is recognizing the drive:
  1. In Windows XP, click Start , and right-click My Computer . In Windows 98 and Me, right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
  2. In Windows XP, select Properties , click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button. In Windows 98 and Me, select Properties , and click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Click the plus sign (+ ) next to DVD/CD-ROM Drives (or similar) category.
  4. Do the following depending on what is listed in the DVD/CD-ROM drives category:
    • If the CD or DVD drive name is missing , the drive is not being detected by Windows. Close Device Manager and skip to the section CD or DVD drive is not recognized by Windows .
    • If a drive name is shown but is disabled (icon is marked with a red X, c00877300.gif ), the drive has been disabled. Right-click the drive name and select Enable . You may have to restart the computer to complete the enabling process. The drive should work correctly once it has been enabled. NOTE: If the drive cannot be enabled, a required service or driver that the drive needs is not functioning or has been disabled. Click the plus sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and troubleshoot any problems found according to any error codes in Device Manager. Resetting the BIOS may also resolve this problem.
    • If a drive name is shown but contains an alert icon (an icon marked with an alert symbol, c00877301.gif ), then use the section Using Device Manager error codes to troubleshoot the problem. You may also use the next section Disc burning software does not recognize the original drive to reset the drive configuration.
    • If the CD or DVD drive is listed as normal but your disc burning software does not recognize the drive, Device Manager shows no special icons c00877302.gif . Windows is detecting the drive but the writing software does not. Leave Device Manager open and continue with the next section Disc burning software does not recognize the original drive .

I put the cd rom into the drive and nothing happens. I go to click on the icon under my computer and it causes the window not to respond.

Confirm that the CD drive is not a CD-ROM dive and the CD you are trying to open is is not a DVD. CD-ROM drive wil not open a DVD ROM and in some cases will cause the system to stop responding if youtry to run it.

Now when you get to sep 3 you will click properties .

5. In properties click Hardware .

6. In Hardware click the DVD/CD device to highlight it .

7. Click properties .

Now look to the bottom of that window to see device status .
If it says , this device is working properly .Properties .
Next click Driver . In driver you will see a list of option tabs that allows you to , Roll Back driver Update driver and Disable driver .
The other option is Driver Details.

Click Roll Back driver to restore the driver back to the state before you added the latest program . Click ok and follow the screen instructions.
If this fails , you can follow these steps to get back to Driver and chose
Disable Driver . Click ok if another window pops up.
Now what you are doing is rebooting the DVD/CD rom drive.

DVD/CD-RW Drive

Try changing the power socket attached to your DVD drive with other available one, and restart your machine. If it is not yet shown in My Computer. try replacing the ribbon connector from motherboard to DVD Drive. If it is not yet shown in My Computer you try then to enter setup from start up to manually detect your DVD Drive. If you need to buy a new drive you can get it at any computer shop or at dell service center.

DVD burning

From your cryptic description, and the extremely limited details given.
Does the DVD even show up on "My Computer"?
If it is not shown...
Go to your "Device Manager" (Right click on  'My Computer', select 'Properties', click the 'Hardware' tab, click
the 'Device Manager' button. Click the "DVD/CD-ROM drives"). If there is some kind of a "Warning" icon superimposed on the 'DVD drive' icon there is your problem!
Uninstall the DRIVERS for THAT DEVICE only.
Click on the faulty devise and hit the remove button, follow the instructions given by the program.
Shutdown, restart, the device will automatically reinstall by the "Found New Hardware" program.
