Question about Sony Grand WEGA KDP-65WS550 65" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

Picture is distorted from center on my 65" Sony projection TV.

When turning on my Sony big screen tv one morning, I immediately noticed that the picture was very distorted. I can see blue shadows or ghosts to the left of images on the screen.

Using the manual, I tried to adjust the convergence. Prior to adjusting I noticed that there was a blue shadow to the left of all the white "+" signs on the screen. In the center of the screen the shadow was just barely to the left of the "+" sign. Moving away from the center to the right and the left sides of the screen, the blue shadows move farther and farther to the left of the "+" sign.

Is this something that should be fixable by adjusting the convergence?
I have some soldering experience - is this something that can be fixed by a novice, or would I be better off trying to buy the part (or board) in a local tv parts store?

By the way, I tried using the flash focus to adjust the picture colors but it didn't work?

I TURNED MY TV ON YESTERDAY AND IT WAS CLEAR. I TURNED ON THIS MORNING THE PICTURE HAS GHOST THE PICTURE IS BLUIRIED. THIS HAPPENED 3YRS AGO AND THEY HAD TO REPLACE A BIG BOX ITEM FROM INSIDE THE TV

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture is distorted from center on my 65

You do have a failure in the convergence circuit of your set. If you are good at soldering you can replace the IC's yourself. They are on the large circuit board on the left side of the set looking from the back, and attached to a large aluminum heat sink. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, I reccomend removing the board and sending it to PTS corp in Indiana. They are pretty reasonable repairing boards, and a lot less than buying a new one.

The picture is distorted. It appears as the picture is being drawn to the center of the screen.

This is a convergence problem. This can be either bad solder connections at the convergence ICs or defective ICs. If you can solder, you can fix this yourself. Try resoldering the pins on the convergence ICs. If that fails, replace the ICs. These are large black ICs attached to a heatsink. These should be marked STKxxx.

Keep me posted.

Go into your service menu and try to adjust the convergence, if it does not adjust, the IC's ( chips) are bad in that circuit. Call a local factory authorized dealer to service your tv. The cost should run around $450.00. Good luck.
