Screen is dark or dead on my 17" Macbook Pro

My brand new laptop's screen remains dark after starting up. The brightness controls have no effect. I connected another monitor which works fine, but course I only see the desktop without any icons. So the computer seems to be fine except that the screen is completely dark and thus unusable. Please help! Thanks!

This could be a backlight issue, a board issue or an inverter issue. Look at the screen closely, if there is a faint image it's either a backlight issue or inverter issue. To weed out between the two you can just order on inverter, they're 20 bucks on ebay, if that doesn't work, replace the backlight. Backlight repairs are somewhat difficult. As much as I would like to be able to tell you a quickfix that will solve backlight the problem, you'll most likely have to google for guides that show you exactly how to replace the backlight or bring it in for repairs.I work for Mac Repair NYC and i have to fix this problem a lot.

It's likely you have a bad inverter in the laptop that gives power to light the LCD screen. You should return or exchange the unit from where you got it from, if they say your return time has expired then contact the manufacturer, most of them carry a 1 Year replacement plan.

First, try plugging in any USB keyboard to your laptop to try the "problem keys" be sure it's just your laptop's built-in keyboard that's messed up.

PowerbookMedic.com sells the built-in keyboard that goes in your 17" MacBook Pro for about $85. That will probably take care of the problem, but check iFixit.com for a guide (with pictures) on how to replace the keyboard, to assess whether you're comfortable undertaking the task.

Macbook Pro Black Screen but Keyboard LED On

If you've already tried turning up the brightness of the screen (the "sun" icon), then you may have a problem with the backlight (possibly burnt out, in which case you'd need a new backlight bulb). See this post for more details:

Yes. It's the F2 key, right above the 2 key.
With certain (rather unusual) Peferences settings, you have to hold down the fn key on the lower left corner of your keyboard for the Fkeys to have their ordinary effect.

VERY Dim screen after a drop

Have you tested it with an external monitor?

I would say you either have a damaged inverter board or screen baclight lamp. Usually the inverter board fails in one of the following ways:

1. When you turn on the laptop, the screen lights up for a short period of time and then goes dark. You still can see an image but it is very dark, almost invisible and definitely not usable. When you restart the laptop, the screen lights up and then goes dark again. The laptop works fine with an external monitor.
2. Your laptop turns on but the screen remains dark all the time. You still can see a very dim image outline. The laptop works fine with an external monitor.
3. The laptop screen works fine for hours or even days, but sometimes it goes very dark as it mentioned above. When you restart the laptop, the screen works fine again.

Inverter failure symptoms are very similar to backlight lamp failure symptoms and in most cases you cannot tell which one is causing the problem until you replace either the inverter board or the backlight lamp. From my personal experience, inverter boards fail more often than backlight lamps. If you have to guess, replace the inverter first.

Macbook screen blotches

If you go to turn on your laptop and loads to your os and the spots on the screen remain there then most likely you have ruptured the liquid crystals in the screen by pressing too hard when you were cleaning the screen with the computer off. you could lightly touch the black spots with your finger and if it displaces the black with a white halo effect around your finger (DO NOT PRESS TOO HARD OR WITH FINGERNAILS DIRECTLY ON THE SCREEN) then it will mean that you will have to replace the screen because it has busted the crystals definately. Screen is dark

Is this a brand new computer? Was it displaying properly before and just suddenly started showing up dark?

Most laptop monitors have a brightness control. It is possible that yours may have been inadvertently turned all the way down (it can happen accidentally). It is usually accessed by a function selector on the lower left side of the keyboard in conjunction with a function key, like F7, F8, F9, etc... you should check your manual first to be sure.

If that doesn't help, then it is possible the backlight for the LCD screen has gone dead. Those can be replaced by authorized service centers.

MacBook Screen Problem

Hi there
If I understand you correctly from start up the screen is dim but does brighten up after time? But now after start up you are getting a flicker how ever a restart solves this.

On the dimming issue. Check your energy saving settings and brightness key is working OK.

The flickering is a bit of a concern.

Just a couple of questions.
Are there any dead spots on the screen? Areas where there are no pixels.
When you tilt the screen forward and backward, does this effect the brightness or flickering?

Mac laptop displays minimum brightness

Check to see if there is a box right below that... Saying something along the lines of readjust to brightness of surroundings, etc!  Make sure box is unchecked for you, in regrds to your issue and then see if that helps!  I will look a little further into it for you!  Let me know if that helps though!
