Was mowing and suddenly the mower came to a halt. I checked the gears and made sure nothing was in the way of anything and also the little hydrostatic ? bolt in the back. thought that might have popped out but not. Anyone have any suggestions? Really cannot afford a new mower right now..Thanks for any suggestions Emma

There is a long belt that connects to the pulley on the motor shaft (there are 2 belts there. The lower one is for the mower deck) and at the other end is connected to the pulley on the transmission. Is the belt in place? There is also a pulley on a spring loaded lever that keeps tension on your drive belt. If you move it away from the belt it should spin freely. Does it? If not, replace. If you lift both rear wheels off the ground at the same time, spinning one should cause the other to spin in the opposite direction. Both wheels should feel like they are controlled by the transmission and not just spinning freely. If not, check to see if the woodruff key on the axle that prevents the wheels from spinning freely has broken on one or both wheels. If all of this looks ok and the drive release bolt is positioned correctly, you very well might have a bad transmission.

How do I determine why the blades will not engage on my mower

With the mower turned off and the deck at its lowest setting, check the top of the deck for any debris like rocks or sticks. Then watch the top of the deck while you move the engage lever. If nothing is moving, you either need to adjust the cable, reattach the cable, or install a new cable. If you see the lever with the pulley on it moving, when the engage lever is locked on, check the tightness of the belt. If it's loose, that is your problem and it could be a stretched belt.

I have a 16hp Craftsman riding mower which I was using when it suddenly stopped. Now when I turn the key, nothing happens...it doesn't even click....Please Help ! Ray

Check the battery with a voltmeter to see if you have 12.5 volts....this voltage is critical for the solenoid and starter to operate properly...next...make sure you battery connections and the connections to the solenoid/starter are good and tight. Poor connections are a very common problem on mowing equipment...one thing you can try is to "jump " a 12 volt signal to the trigger lead on the solenoid...if this triggers the starter, then the keyswitch may be defective...also...before you go changing parts...make sure the fuse(s) is good...there should be a fuse from the keyswitch to the solenoid

Mower stopped moving

If this is a manual transmission, check the drive belt from the engine back to the transmission. With the clutch pedal up (engaged) there should be no slack in the belt.

If it is a hydrostatic drive, check the drive belt and make sure it is tight. Check the transmission fluid level and make sure it is full. Refer to your owners manual as it will describe the fluid check proceedure.
Good luck, let me know.

Suddenly stopped driving...

Check for a worn belt first. Then check the linkage. Next jack the unit up and try to run it forward and reverse with the engine running. If there is any movement at all in either direction then check the fluid level to see if it is up to the top.The worst case is the hydro. unit has a stuck check valve or something broken inside.Hope some of this helps. donnyb60
