Hello tcoop,

It sounds like you had a convergence problem. You made a big mistake, you may not have had to replace the board only repair it, or at least the parts on it. Granted that skill is dying these days. Ok I cut to the chase, to find someone to repair the problem is not going to be your problem, your problem is going to be finding someone to do it under 300.00, 280 was letting you off cheap. Right now I have 10 convergence boards in my shop repaird tested and ready to be put back in the lowest one is $295.50. If you want to take on the task of doing this yourself ok here is the advice you seek:

1) get a schematic of your TV www.servicemanuals.net  may have it

2) get a multimeter

3) optional equipment Oscilloscope, and Universal Video Analyzer

4) solder iron and desoldering tool (solder sucker)

Using the schematic as a guide measure the bias resistors and zener diodes to make sure they are ok if they are not replace them.

The desolder the 2 Convergence Correction Amplifier chips (STK392-110) and replace them with two new ones or upgrade to the STK392-150s.

After installing the two new correction amplifiers, reconnect board and test. Using the oscilloscope to look at the waveforms making sure they are correct as per the schematic. The Universal Video Analyzer is supplying the test reference signal.

Now if you don't have this equipment and do not have a background in electronics. The only option is to pay to have the board fixed.

There is one other option:

Finding someone who knows how to fix those boards here on fixya.com who is willing to fix yours at a reduced rate.  The question then becomes what price under $280.00 are you willing to pay? The ball is in your court, so as to say.

Not trying to sound mean or hostile, I am just trying to get you to see that boardswapping got you into this mess, but what you should have been doing is finding someone who knows what they were doing at a component level. 280.00 is a good price for the labor and the possible parts involved.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

Shuttle83

Samsung 40" flat screen looses sound

this problem started on my LN-S4051D a couple of years ago. eventually the sound stopped working altogether. I then started using my surround sound speakers for the TV via optical out but soon that stopped working as well. I recently took the TV to a repair shop who said that the main board is bad and needs to be replaced. Labor plus parts was going to cost me $400. I said no thanks and paid for the estimate. Good luck.

It's possible that the convergence IC's may be bad in this set along with a few resistors. A TV repair shop should be able to fix the set for you.
