It's definitely a firmware problem. I called Panasonic and they were very polite about the entire situation and sent me a SD card with the firmware update. If you don't have time and you're tired of listening to tv at the same volume there is a way to do a hard reset.
I figured that unplugging the unit would do this, but there is one other step that you have to do to ensure that this works.
Generally the power button on the tv is always in the "on" position, this is what allows the remote to work. In order to do a hard reset the on/off button must be in the off position. Make sure that is off, then unplug the unit, let it sit there for a minute or two and plug it back in. If the tv comes back on as soon as you plug it back into the wall/powerstrip then the button was not in the off position.
This isn't the best fix, you'll still need to get the firmware update but it will at least give you the ability to use your tv normally....well until it decides to randomly lock up on you again and you have to do this all over.

i'm having the same problem. i don't think it is the remote control as the volume/channel buttons on the front of the TV don't work either.
Try changing the input device to something you are sure, works such as a DVD player. Look for any loose contacts in RC jacks/sockets/Cable. Look for jammed buttons on remote and/or on control panel. Try removing the batteries from remote and operating from the control panel of TV. If these are ok, Switch off TV manually, switch off power, remove plug and retry after 48 hours. If problem persists, please refer it to a qualified service technician.
