- Ok, after you are in the router's setup, what you need to do is the following:
Select Wireless link at the top of the page
Select Wireless Security in the second line of links
Select the type of security that you want, I would suggest WEP
Change the encryption to 128bit
Enter a passphrase, kindof like a password, and click apply settings
After the settings are applied, write down the value of Key 1, you will need this later
Things to remember, Change the default channel from 6 to something else, you are probably not the only one using wireless in the area, and changing channels prevents a lot of "noise" which slows down your connection, and in some cases prevents it. Also, Change the SSID to something unique. Hackers love the default settings, so don't give them an easy target.
After your router is set up, now it's time to set up your wireless connection on your desktop/notebook. Remember the Key that you wrote down, you will need that for this part.
Right click on the wireless connection in the bottom right hand corner of your screen, select "View Wireless Networks", if you get a message saying that windows cannot configure this adapter, close this window, and open up the wireless configuration utility that corresponds with your wireless card. In the security settings, make sure you have WEP as your security (if that's what you selected as your type), 128bit (26 Hexidecimal characters) encryption, and the key you wrote down input into the program. At this point, you should be able to connect.
If Windows controls your settings, when you chose "View Wireless Networks", double click on your network in the box, type in the key that you wrote down, and make sure you do it twice, exactly the same, otherwise you will get an error. At that point, you should be able to connect.
Should you have any problems, I am available for remote assistance in the evenings (Central Time), and only require that you email me ahead of time at
pattersj78@yahoo.com and request an PIN code. A few requirements, You MUST have a WIRED connection to your router to set it up, and you MUST have the wireless card installed in your machine, including the software.
